Benson Elton: A thoughtful leader with a passion for science
Gig Harbor Now is posting profiles featuring the Students of Distinction being honored by the Greater Gig Harbor Foundation. Peers, teachers or parents nominate students, who must be a graduating senior at a Peninsula School District school. A panel of community leaders selects students to be honored in one of seven categories: academics; athletics; career and technical excellence; community service; music, arts and drama; overcoming adversity; and science and technology.
These students will be celebrated during a banquet from 6 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, May 21, 2025, at Ocean5, 5268 Point Fosdick Dr.

With a perfect 4.0 GPA, a 4.6 weighted GPA, and a class rank of 1, Benson Elton has carved out a place for himself as one of Peninsula High School’s most driven and well-rounded students. But beyond the grades and accolades, Benson’s curiosity, leadership, and joy for learning have defined his high school years – and will no doubt continue to shape his future as he prepares to study biochemistry at the University of Utah with the goal of becoming a dentist.
Though his interest in science began with a humble fourth-grade science fair project – analyzing the corrosive effects of different beverages on materials with his father – it was in high school that Benson’s love for science truly took hold. What started as a casual curiosity grew into something more meaningful as he discovered how mathematics and science work together to explain the world in tangible ways. That connection has fueled his desire to enter the medical field, where he’s excited by the promise of future technological advancements in patient care.

Benson Elton
Benson’s talents extend far beyond the lab. He’s a two-year captain of the Peninsula High School boys’ tennis team and a starting midfielder on the lacrosse team. He’s also a dedicated cellist, earning the distinction of first chair in the Peninsula Youth Orchestra. With over 100 hours of community service under his belt—and a varsity letter to show for it – Benson has consistently found ways to give back, lead by example, and elevate those around him.
When reflecting on his journey, he credits “Profe K,” his Spanish teacher, as a meaningful mentor who supported him throughout all four years of high school. And when asked what he’ll remember most, it’s not just the academics – but the vibrant student life, spirit weeks, and cheering with friends that made the experience so memorable.
As Benson looks ahead to a future in dentistry, he carries with him a love for learning, a head for science, and a heart for service – a combination sure to leave an impact on every community he becomes part of.
