One of the most formative experiences in Emma’s academic journey occurred during her sophomore year in World History Honors with Mr. Whitesell. This class was particularly challenging as it included four different assessments at the end of each unit: A multiple-choice test, a presentation, an essay, and a timed essay. As a sophomore unaccustomed to such demanding tests, Emma faced a steep learning curve. The timed essays and presentations were difficult at first — she struggled with writing too much or too little during the essays and using filler words in presentations. Over time, however, Emma developed valuable skills such as time management, quick but thoughtful thinking, and the ability to embrace imperfection while building her confidence. These lessons not only helped Emma thrive in Mr. Whitesell’s class but have carried over to all her subsequent courses, including those taken at Tacoma Community College (TCC) and GHHS.

A major source of Emma’s passion for learning is her family. Growing up, her parents and oldest brother always encouraged her curiosity by answering her questions on any topic, no matter how big or small. They made sure to explain things in a way Emma could understand, fostering a deep sense of wonder and a lifelong love of learning. This early encouragement fueled her natural curiosity and continues to inspire her academic journey.

Emma’s most significant academic achievement is the progress she has made in humanities courses, particularly at TCC. As someone who is primarily focused on STEM, humanities courses have often been her greatest challenge. However, she took on this challenge with enthusiasm, excelling in classes such as Art Appreciation, Introduction to Shakespeare, Argumentative Writing, and Medieval and Renaissance Art History. These classes have expanded her perspective and introduced her to new ways of thinking. Emma found beauty and inspiration in the arts, especially through the Shakespeare class, which deepened her appreciation for the power and nuance of words. Additionally, her Argumentative Writing class taught her how to use words effectively to persuade and influence, a skill that complements her scientific background. By stepping outside her comfort zone, Emma has not only succeeded in these classes but also broadened her worldview, a feat she is incredibly proud of.

Emma’s academic journey is defined by her resilience, adaptability, and love of learning. With her passion for learning and her ability to overcome obstacles, Emma is poised to achieve even greater success in the future.
