At Gig Harbor High School, James has benefited from an environment that encourages academic and musical excellence. He has been a part of various prestigious musical groups, including the Tacoma Youth Symphony, Gig Harbor Wind Symphony, and the Gig Harbor Pit Orchestra, and his involvement in these ensembles has only deepened his passion for music. His dedication to his craft is evident in his impressive list of accomplishments, which includes being a four-time State Solo Clarinet Qualifier, a three-time All-State participant, and a three-time WIBC honoree.
James’ performance achievements include a first-place finish at the State Solo and Ensemble competition in Small Woodwind, as well as solo performances with the Harbor Winds and Bremerton Symphony Orchestra. One of his most memorable experiences was soloing with the Bremerton Symphony, which he described as both thrilling and nerve-wracking. Despite his initial nerves, it became one of his most exciting and fulfilling performances to date.
In addition to his musical accomplishments, James draws inspiration from a wide range of sources, including influential figures like Anthony McGill, the principal clarinetist of the New York Philharmonic. McGill’s success as the first African American principal clarinetist in the orchestra’s history has had a profound impact on James, motivating him to strive for greatness and break barriers in his own musical career.
With his sights set on a career in music, James McCourt’s passion and dedication to his craft are sure to lead him to continued success in the world of music performance.
