Gig Harbor Now is posting profiles featuring the Students of Distinction being honored by the Greater Gig Harbor Foundation. Peers, teachers or parents nominate students, who must be a graduating senior at a Peninsula School District school. A panel of community leaders selects students to be honored in one of seven categories: academics; athletics; career and technical excellence; community service; music, arts and drama; overcoming adversity; and science and technology.

These students will be celebrated during a banquet from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, May 20, at Ocean5, 5268 Pt. Fosdick Dr.

For Ava Hurley, academic achievement has always been about more than personal success — it has been a way to create opportunities for others and strengthen the community around her. The Gig Harbor High School senior has challenged herself through rigorous coursework, leadership positions, and service opportunities, all while remaining grounded in the belief that everyone deserves kindness and support.

Ava’s academic accomplishments are remarkable. She completed 12 AP courses and multiple UW classes, earned the AP Capstone Diploma, achieved a perfect PSAT score, and was named a National Merit Scholarship Finalist — the only student in the district to receive the distinction this year.

“To me, it feels like the culmination of all the hard work I’ve put in throughout my academic career,” she says.

But some of Ava’s most meaningful work happened outside the classroom. As an ASB Senator, NHS President, and member of the Peninsula School District Student Athletic Leadership Council, she worked closely with school administration to develop Mental Health and Gratitude Week programming, improve student-athlete culture, and organize events that brought students together.

She also found fulfillment through volunteer tutoring at Kopachuck Middle School, helping students who needed extra encouragement and support. “I feel the most fulfilled when I’m giving back to my community,” she says.

Ava credits much of her growth and confidence to Gig Harbor teacher Mrs. Poole, who encouraged her to step outside of her comfort zone and pursue leadership opportunities. “Her influence has shaped my growth as a student and given me the confidence and determination to pursue my dreams,” Ava says.

After graduation, Ava plans to study Civil Engineering with the goal of becoming a Water and Wastewater Engineer. She hopes to help vulnerable communities gain access to clean drinking water and stronger environmental infrastructure.

“I think everyone deserves these equalities to live a safe and healthy life,” she says. “I plan to devote my life to ensuring this.”
