Gig Harbor Now is posting profiles featuring the Students of Distinction being honored by the Greater Gig Harbor Foundation. Peers, teachers or parents nominate students, who must be a graduating senior at a Peninsula School District school. A panel of community leaders selects students to be honored in one of seven categories: academics; athletics; career and technical excellence; community service; music, arts and drama; overcoming adversity; and science and technology.

These students will be celebrated during a banquet from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, May 20, at Ocean5, 5268 Pt. Fosdick Dr.

For Karin Heikkila, athletics have always been about more than competition. They have been a source of connection, discipline, and personal growth — shaping nearly every aspect of her high school experience. As a standout dual-sport athlete at Gig Harbor High School, Karin balanced elite-level soccer and track while maintaining rigorous academics and leadership commitments, all while learning how to navigate pressure, exhaustion, and sacrifice.

A four-year varsity soccer player and standout track athlete, Karin helped lead Gig Harbor to league championships, state appearances, and a state title in the 4×100 relay. Along the way, she earned Puget Sound League MVP honors in soccer, multiple all-area recognitions, and established herself as one of the school’s top multi-sport athletes.

But behind the accolades were countless late nights, packed schedules, and difficult decisions. “My body and mind are always in a state of complete exhaustion,” Karin says. “Balancing two full-time sports with college classes, high school classes, and life outside of sports is extremely hard.”

Still, she credits those challenges with shaping her resilience and teaching her the importance of balance. Even through injuries and the emotional uncertainty of the college recruiting process, Karin remained determined to trust herself and continue pursuing her goals.

That perseverance ultimately led her to Samford University, where she will continue her soccer career at the Division I level. After a difficult recruiting journey filled with injuries and setbacks, Karin found her dream school almost unexpectedly at a summer camp.

“I learned so much about myself and the importance of trusting the Lord and giving Him control of your life,” she says.

Outside of athletics, Karin enjoys quiet moments that help her recharge — walks through the harbor, watching sunsets, journaling, and spending time with friends. Those moments, she says, help her stay grounded amid the demands of competition.

Through years of balancing two sports, academics, and leadership, Karin has learned that success is not about always winning. “I measure success when I know I gave my absolute best,” she says. “That there was nothing else I could have done better.”
