Gig Harbor Now is posting profiles featuring the Students of Distinction being honored by the Greater Gig Harbor Foundation. Peers, teachers or parents nominate students, who must be a graduating senior at a Peninsula School District school. A panel of community leaders selects students to be honored in one of seven categories: academics; athletics; career and technical excellence; community service; music, arts and drama; overcoming adversity; and science and technology.

These students will be celebrated during a banquet from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, May 20, at Ocean5, 5268 Pt. Fosdick Dr.

For Royal Charles, athletics have been built on grit, consistency, and a commitment to pushing himself beyond expectations. During his time at Peninsula High School, Royal became a standout multi-sport athlete whose leadership and work ethic helped define his teams both on and off the field.

On the football field, Royal earned recognition as one of the area’s top linemen, collecting multiple all-league honors on both the offensive and defensive lines, including first-team selections and all-area recognition. His impact extended beyond statistics, earning him Team MVP honors and the Captain’s Award while helping lead Peninsula through highly competitive seasons.

Royal also brought the same intensity and perseverance to basketball, where he earned the team’s Grit Award for his effort, determination, and willingness to do whatever was needed for the success of the group.

Those qualities ultimately helped Royal earn a football scholarship to Central Washington University, where he plans to continue his athletic career while studying physical education and business management.

While his accomplishments on paper are impressive, coaches and teammates alike recognize Royal for the leadership and toughness he demonstrated every day through preparation, accountability, and consistency. Whether competing in practices, games, or balancing the demands of being a student-athlete, he developed a reputation as someone willing to outwork expectations and support the people around him.

As he prepares for the next chapter at the collegiate level, Royal hopes to continue growing both as an athlete and as a leader. His journey through high school athletics has reinforced the value of discipline, resilience, and teamwork — lessons that will continue to guide him long after his playing days are over.
