2025 Students of Distinction
Hope Taylor: A quiet confidence, earned and embraced
Gig Harbor Now is posting profiles featuring the Students of Distinction being honored by the Greater Gig Harbor Foundation. Peers, teachers or parents nominate students, who must be a graduating senior at a Peninsula School District school. A panel of community leaders selects students to be honored in one of seven categories: academics; athletics; career and technical excellence; community service; music, arts and drama; overcoming adversity; and science and technology.
These students will be celebrated during a banquet from 6 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, May 21, 2025, at Ocean5, 5268 Point Fosdick Dr.

Hope Taylor once feared the sound of her own voice in front of a crowd. Public speaking was a challenge that loomed large – one that filled her with nerves and self-doubt. But like many of the obstacles she’s faced in life, she didn’t back down. Instead, she stood at the front of a school meeting, led it confidently, and discovered something powerful in the process: she was capable of more than she had ever believed.
That moment wasn’t just about a speech. It was a symbol of how far Hope had come. The challenges she’s faced – some visible, others more quietly carried – have shaped her into someone who moves forward with kindness, resilience, and determination. “I learned that all the negativity was just in my head,” she says. “And that I can do whatever I put my mind to.”

At Henderson Bay High School, Hope found more than a school – she found a community that believed in her. Teachers like Andrea Kurtz helped her see her own potential, offering encouragement and grace during hard days. “She makes everyone believe that they’ll be successful,” Hope shares. “She’s the kindest person you’ll ever meet.”
Hope’s strength doesn’t shout – it leads with quiet kindness. She’s the kind of person who finds joy in uplifting others, even when things are difficult in her own life. It’s that spirit that has helped her stay steady through hard times, and it’s that same spirit that motivated her to save up and purchase her first car – a major personal milestone that reflects her independence and work ethic.
As she looks ahead to a future in business, culinary arts, or nursing, Hope carries with her more than just a plan. She carries a growing sense of confidence, a deep appreciation for the people who have helped her grow, and a belief in herself that’s been hard-earned. And she’s just getting started.
