Letter to the Editor | Offer incentives to build smaller homes
Barbara Moss’s letter regarding the housing needs is spot right on. The Gig Harbor council is ass backwards with the multiple family tax exemption ordinance they are proposing.
When it comes to the actual math, if you do it, it will not provide the housing needed for the people who work in our city who have the lower income. The developers will build big houses. They will get the tax exemptions and they will sell the homes to people whose income is over $100,000 a year.
If the council truly wants to try to provide low-income housing instead of offering tax exemptions to developers for large $900,000 homes, put the stipulation that 20% of their homes have to be smaller homes. Like under 1,500 to 1,800 sq ft.
That will bring the price of the home down to where the retail clerks, the senior citizens downsizing, the city employees, etc.will be able to afford the homes. And then more homes can be built because they’re smaller sizes. Our city council needs to quit catering to the developers and start catering to the citizens of the city.
