Letter to the Editor | Madrona maintenance is lacking

Posted on September 8th, 2025 By: James Castino

Definition of “Maintenance”:

1. : the act of maintaining something or someone: such as. a : the act of keeping property or equipment in good condition by making repairs, correcting problems, etc.

We are a group of older guys that play golf at Madrona Links each week, and have done so for over ten years or so. Given the current situation between Pen Met Parks and the current owners, specifically the Stutsman entity which apparently has a contractual responsibility for course maintenance, I will share our observations in playing here regularly.

In short, although Madrona offers us a certain level of challenges, and continues to be fun for us to play, we also continue to see all kinds of ruts, mud bogs, and soggy turf all over the course. Regardless of the weather, even in the dry Summer months, the same areas never seem to get any attention or repair? And paved cart paths with very uneven surfaces, and tree roots underneath causing lots of bumpy rides. In looking back these many years, we have not observed the course operators performing true repairs. We observe that they regularly mow the grass; in fact they even mow the grass in the very dry mid-Summer when it does not need mowing. …. It is as if this is the only action that the operators want to do, or are capable of doing?

Madrona is such a “Diamond in the rough” as the saying goes, that could offer the greater Gig Harbor golfing community so much more, to a much higher level of professionalism.
