Letter to the Editor | Honoring our heroes with every banner
Along Harborview Drive and on Pioneer, you’ll see banners proudly hanging from the light poles — faces of our heroes, their names displayed with honor, their service branches proudly noted. These are our Gig Harbor Veterans Banners, and they represent far more than decoration; they represent the heart and soul of our community’s gratitude.
Each banner tells a story — of courage, sacrifice, and commitment. Some of the faces belong to those who served decades ago in World War II or Vietnam; others are young men and women who have served more recently in Iraq, Afghanistan, and beyond. Every one of them has stepped forward to serve something greater than themselves — our nation, our freedoms, and our way of life.

The Gig Harbor Veterans Banner Program is one of Gig Harbor’s most meaningful community efforts. It’s more than just a display — it’s a collective act of remembrance. Families, friends, and neighbors come together to sponsor these banners, ensuring that our veterans are recognized not only on Veterans Day but every day these banners fly. It’s deeply moving to walk downtown and see so many faces — fathers, mothers, daughters, brothers, grandparents— all who have worn the uniform with pride.
The banners also remind us that freedom is not free. Behind every veteran’s name is a story of sacrifice. These banners encourage us to support not just the memory of service but the continuing needs of veterans and their families right here in our community.Gig Harbor has always been a town that values connection and compassion. The Veterans Banners are a perfect reflection of that spirit. They remind us of who we are and what we stand for.
As we approach Veterans Day, please take a stroll downtown. Look up at the faces, read the names, and take a moment to reflect.

Your effort ensures that our heroes are not just remembered but celebrated. In a world that can feel divided, the Gig Harbor Veterans Banners bring us together. They remind us of courage, sacrifice, and community pride — values worth saluting every day.
Thank you to our Veterans and their families.
