Letter to the Editor | Traffic cameras could make Burnham roundabout safer

Posted on November 19th, 2025 By: Barbara Moss

Since the onset of its construction, the Burnham roundabout has had nothing but problems.

Granted there are still a few people that are unable to comprehend the concept, but that is probably never going to change. Accidents seem to occur constantly, most due to excessive speed or failing to yield.

It seems the simple concept by police is if you are hit, you are automatically at fault, however this is not necessarily correct. If you are broadsided by someone coming from an inside lane, the person hit is cited because according to police they can’t prove speed.

Why not? Why in a very active, troublesome roundabout with a considerable amount of accidents do we not have cameras or traffic enforcement? We seem to have plenty of funds for special events, flowers, festivals, etc, etc., why then do we not have money for basic safety?

Sadly our traffic enforcement has taken a hit (no pun intended), our officers are stretched thin and traffic issues are not a priority. I can not understand how we fail to have ticketing cameras for everyone’s safety and perhaps a bit of relief for our overworked officers. So, city council, mayor when do you think you might consider the safety of residents?
