Harbor Happenings | Local options for watching the Super Bowl

Fans will gather in homes and local watering holes as the Seattle Seahawks face the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl on Sunday, Feb. 8. Kick-off is at 3:30 p.m.

Finholm’s Market, 8812 N. Harborview Dr., will have a watch party and potluck starting at 3 p.m., with three TVs, a dozen brews on tap and more in the coolers.

The Float, 14511 Sherman Dr. in Purdy, will have $3 drafts, prizes, giveaways of Seahawks gear and “other cool stuff,” also starting at 3 p.m.

Ocean5 will host a watch party at 3:30 p.m. at 5268 Point Fosdick Dr.

Local kids making music

Peninsula School District’s Jazz Night is Tuesday, Feb. 3, at Peninsula High School. Jazz bands from several district middle and high schools will perform. The music starts at 5 p.m. and continues until around 10 p.m.

The Goodman Middle School and Gig Harbor High School bands also will compete at the Quincy Jones Jazz Festival at Olympic College in Bremerton on Thursday and Friday, Feb. 5 and 6. GMS will play at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb.  5. GHHS will play at 3:40 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6. Tickets for the festival are available online. Adult general admission is $25; kids’ tickets are $10. A Jazz Legacy ticket is $100 for those who want to make a donation.

On Saturday, Feb. 7, the GHHS Percussion Ensembles will compete in the Regional Solo and Ensemble Contest at Peninsula High School. Ensemble l will play at 9:40 a.m. Ensemble II will compete at 11:30 a.m. Peninsula High School is at 14105 Purdy Dr. NW.

‘Glow’ party

PenMet Parks hosts a “Glow” party at 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6, with glow-in-the-dark sports, a blacklight dance, neon face painting, crafts and more. The party is at the PenMet Recreation Center, 2416 14th Ave. NW.

Pier into the Night

Join Harbor WildWatch for an underwater adventure, watching from the Maritime Pier as divers with video cameras livestream the sea life they encounter – like sculpin and gunnel fish, several species of crab, feather-duster tube worms and maybe even a giant Pacific octopus. WildWatch staff will identify what’s shown on the big screen set up on the pier.

Fun and games

Locust Cider hosts Trivia Night starting at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 4, at 3207 57th St. Ct. (next to the Inn at Gig Harbor). Thursday is Trivia Night at the Beer Vault, 14004 Purdy Drive, starting at 6:30 p.m.

Locust Cider hosts Drag Bingo from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6, featuring Hanna MiaJoint.

On Saturday, Feb. 7, play games, listen to music and bid for treasures in a silent auction at Locust Cider in a Side-Quest Level Up benefit for Lost Star as the business recovers from a recent flood.

Live music

James Coates plays covers and originals that blend country, soul and R&B at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6, at Olalla Winery. Tickets here.

The Gigsters play at Kimball Coffeeshop at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6. Kimball also hosts an open mic at 6 p.m. Thursdays.

Gig Harbor’s own Triple Time string trio, featuring violinists Mary Manning and Gwendolyn Taylor and cellist Margaret Thorndill, performs classical music at 3 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6, at Gig Harbor Audio, 3019 Judson St. This month’s program includes music from France, England, Russia, Italy and the U.S. The concert is free, but space is limited.

Shawn Pratt of Northwest Chill hosts an open mic at The Beer Vault. at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6. All ages and skill levels are welcome to perform. 14004 Purdy Dr.

Joel Gibson Jr. takes the stage Friday at 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6, at The Float, 14511 Sherman Dr. On Saturday, Feb. 7, the Bottoms Up Band plays at 8:30 p.m.

The Harbor Ukulele Group (HUG) meets for a jam session at 11 a.m. Saturdays at the Gig Harbor Library, 4424 Point Fosdick Dr. New players are always welcome.

At the movies

The Flashback Cinema movie at the Galaxy Theatres in Uptown on Sunday, Feb. 8, is “Casablanca,” the Oscar-winning World War II story starring Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman and Claude Raines.  Showtime is noon on Feb. 8. Flashback movies are just $5.

The Galaxy’s Classic Film at 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 9, is “Woman of the Year,” starring Katherine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy as rival reporters. Classic Films are just $5.

Civic engagement

Gig Harbor Mayor Mary Barber hosts “Coffee with the Mayor” from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 4, at Davenport Coffee next to Harbor Greens.

The city of Gig Harbor Civil Service Commission meets at 3 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 5, and the Planning Commission meets at 5:30 p.m. the same day at the Civic Center, 3510 Grandview St.

The Gig Harbor City Council meet at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 9, at the Civic Center. Tentative agenda items include an amendment to the city’s wage schedule, a landscape mitigation contract for Harbor Hill and adoption of new business hours for the Civic Center.

Lawyers from TacomaProBono will offer free advice on eviction, landlord-tenant issues, family and consumer law and other issues from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 10, at the Civic Center.
