Jonas Koller: Creating connection and conversation
Gig Harbor Now is posting profiles featuring the Students of Distinction being honored by the Greater Gig Harbor Foundation. Peers, teachers or parents nominate students, who must be a graduating senior at a Peninsula School District school. A panel of community leaders selects students to be honored in one of seven categories: academics; athletics; career and technical excellence; community service; music, arts and drama; overcoming adversity; and science and technology.
These students will be celebrated during a banquet from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, May 20, at Ocean5, 5268 Pt. Fosdick Dr.

For Jonas Koller, curiosity has always been the starting point. What began as a childhood fascination with history and airplanes eventually grew into a passion for learning, leadership, and meaningful community conversation.
“I’ve always been really into history,” Jonas says. “I loved talking with my dad about history and my interests, and he had a great way of getting me engaged in things that I initially might’ve found boring.”

At Peninsula High School, that curiosity evolved into academic success and a wide range of leadership roles. Jonas balanced AP courses, dual-enrollment college classes, varsity soccer, Knowledge Bowl, piano, journalism, and community involvement — all while building a reputation as someone deeply invested in connecting with others.
As a student writer and columnist for the Key Peninsula News, Jonas explored topics ranging from student life to politics and racism, even organizing a student political debate to encourage discussion within the community. He also served as captain of both the Peninsula soccer and Knowledge Bowl teams, helping foster teamwork and collaboration while leading by example.
“Leadership means having the courage to stand out from the crowd and the humility to work with your community,” he says.
Beyond academics and extracurriculars, Jonas found fulfillment in persistence — whether overcoming challenges on the soccer field, preparing for competitions, or balancing his many commitments. “I feel the most fulfilled when I overcome something difficult through persistence and get to celebrate it with loved ones,” he says.
Music has also remained an important part of his life. A longtime piano player and guitarist, Jonas has performed at local recitals and nursing homes while continuing to pursue creativity outside of school.
After graduation, Jonas plans to study economics and explore careers in business or government. Passionate about addressing systemic inequality, he hopes to use his education to advocate for meaningful change and create a more equitable future.
“To me, success is utilizing the gifts that you have to do good things for the people around you,” he says.
