Gig Harbor Now is posting profiles featuring the Students of Distinction being honored by the Greater Gig Harbor Foundation. Peers, teachers or parents nominate students, who must be a graduating senior at a Peninsula School District school. A panel of community leaders selects students to be honored in one of seven categories: academics; athletics; career and technical excellence; community service; music, arts and drama; overcoming adversity; and science and technology.

These students will be celebrated during a banquet from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, May 20, at Ocean5, 5268 Pt. Fosdick Dr.

For Ren Tucker, healing has been a journey marked by courage, resilience, and the determination to build a future beyond the circumstances of the past. Throughout childhood, Ren experienced instability, neglect, and trauma that no young person should have to endure. Yet through it all, Ren continued searching for safety, support, and eventually, a sense of belonging.

“There was a long time where I felt trapped in my life,” Ren says. “But finally telling my story changed everything.”

After years of carrying painful experiences quietly, Ren eventually reached out for help — a decision that became a turning point toward healing and stability. Today, Ren lives in a supportive home environment surrounded by people who offer the care and encouragement that had once felt out of reach.

“I finally have the life I dreamed about having when I was younger,” Ren says.

The transformation has been visible not only emotionally, but academically and personally as well. Ren went from struggling in school to becoming an A student, actively participating in leadership class, helping organize school spirit activities, and building strong relationships with teachers and classmates.

Beyond academics, Ren has also pursued CPR and child CPR certifications and developed an interest in forensic science — a field Ren hopes to study in college after graduation.

“I’m excited to see where life takes me and how much more I’ll grow,” Ren says.

Despite everything Ren has overcome, one of the most striking qualities is empathy. Rather than allowing painful experiences to harden perspective, Ren hopes to eventually advocate for children who may feel overlooked or unsupported.

“My story doesn’t define me,” Ren says. “It just shows how strong I’ve become.”

That strength — quiet, resilient, and deeply compassionate — has carried Ren through unimaginable hardship and continues to shape the hopeful future now unfolding ahead.
