Harold Mayer MD, 92

Harold Mayer MD, age 92 of Gig Harbor, WA, died peacefully at home on May 27, 2026.

Harold was born on October 15, 1933 to fleeing immigrant parents Leon and Rebecca (Stivelman) Mayer in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Most of his European family was killed in the holocaust. The small number that left in time seeded the future of the family in Canada.

After winning top provincial academic honors, Harold attended the University of Alberta on scholarship followed by medical school. He met his future wife, Maralyn Jean Macphee, and married in June 1958. Harold assumed the practice of retiring physician Lawrence Skinner at the Lakewood Clinic in Pierce County. While Harold worked many hours per week tending his patients, he assumed the Chief of Staff office in 1975 at Lakewood General Hospital, and was instrumental in planning the future St. Claire’s Hospital.

He is survived by his wife of almost 68 years, Jean Mayer, daughter Marianne Mayer Kersten (Kenley), sons Robert and Michael, grandchildren Veronica, Brant (Chissta), and Skyler (Cammie) Kersten, Madeline and Ava Mayer, great grandchildren Kayvon, Shayda, and Mitra Kersten.

A memorial will be held on June 27th at Haven of Rest in Gig Harbor at 12 noon. All that knew him are welcome to attend. Live streaming is available at havenrest.com
