Gig Harbor Little League team advances to state championship game

The Gig Harbor Little League Majors will play for a state championship at 9 a.m. Saturday, July 25, in Walla Walla.

The team, made of up 11- and 12-year-olds, advanced to the title game with a 2-0, extra-innings win over Richland National on Tuesday. Gig Harbor, the champions of Washington Little League’s District 2, are unbeaten in four games at the state tournament.

Because the Little League state tournament is a double-elimination bracket, Gig Harbor has two chances to win one game. If the local team does not win Saturday, it would play again at 9 a.m. Sunday for a berth at  regionals.

The Gig Harbor Little League Majors team is one win away from a state championship.

Gig Harbor is the only unbeaten team left in the tournament. Their opponent Saturday will be either Northeast Seattle, Lake Stevens, Soundview, Kirkland American or Richland National again, depending on the results of games played Thursday and Friday.

The state champion will advance to a regional tournament, just one step away from the Little League World Series.

Gig Harbor Little League owns four softball state championships in its 30-year history, but has never won a baseball state title.

Other local teams at state

The Gig Harbor Little League 10U softball team opens state tournament play on Saturday in Seattle against South Hill.

The local association’s 10U baseball team won two state tournament games before falling to Bonney Lake/Sumner, 12-2, in an elimination game on July 22 in Woodinville.
