Two lanes of westbound Narrows Bridge to close Saturday (Aug. 1) for repairs

Stop us if you’ve heard this before, but the Washington State Department of Transportation will close two lanes of the westbound Tacoma Narrows Bridge on Saturday, Aug. 1, for repairs.

And once again, bridge joints are the culprit.

WSDOT announced on Wednesday, July 29, that the two right lanes of westbound Highway 16 will close from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday. The on-ramp from Jackson Avenue in Tacoma to westbound Highway 16 also will close.

While WSDOT specified those hours in its announcement, crews have finished up work earlier than expected during previous closures. And there have been many previous closures.

The westbound bridge, built in 1950, has required emergency repairs three times in 2026. Three more were necessary in 2025 and a whopping five in 2024. All of those involved bridge joints, according to WSDOT.

The department encouraged drivers to sign up for email alerts for the latest information about the bridge.
