Harbor Happenings | 9/11 remembrance, Fall Farmers Market and more

Gig Harbor Fire and Medic One will host a remembrance ceremony on Friday, Sept. 11, to mark 25 years since the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, Pentagon and United Airlines Flight 93.

Gig Harbor Fire Chief Dennis Doan and Gig Harbor Police Chief Trey Federici will speak and a fire service honor guard will add a somber note with their bagpipes. The hour-long ceremony will take place rain or shine at 9 a.m. at the department’s headquarters, 10222 Bujacich Road NW.

Fall Farmers Market

A new Fall Farmers Market begins from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8, in the parking lot at B’s Bagels, 3308 Uddenberg Lane.

Shoppers will find a variety of peak-season corn, summer squash, greens, herbs and root crops, plus seafood, fresh-made pasta and sauces and live music by Ava Lin. The market will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays through Sept. 29. B’s Bagels and Butters will stay open until 7 p.m. on market days.

History Rocks online auction begins

Harbor History Museum’s History Rocks online auction opened Monday, Sept. 7 and continues through Sept. 18, with a variety of items up for bid. Click here to participate.

Plant swap

The last plant swap of the year takes place from 10 to 11 a.m. .Saturday, Sept. 12, in the Uptown parking lot. It’s a gardener-to-gardener sharing of free plants, seeds, cuttings, divisions and even gardening tools, books and accessories. Bring something to trade, or cookies or small tip-sized envelops for seed collectors – or just come to ask questions and make new gardening friends.

Race for a Soldier

The Permission to Start Dreaming Foundation hosts the 16th annual Race for a Soldier on Sunday, Sept. 13.

The race — including a half-marathon, 10K, 5K and kids runs — helps raise awareness of the challenges faced by military service members, veterans and first responders living with the effects of PTSD and traumatic brain injuries.

Runners in a previous Race for a Soldier in Gig Harbor. The race is one of the Permission to Start Dreaming Foundation’s biggest annual fundraisers. This year, the Race for a Soldier is Sunday, Sept. 13.

The adult races start at the Tom Taylor YMCA, 10550 Harbor Hill Dr., around 7:45 a.m. The kids run begins at 10 a.m. Registration ranges from $15 for the kids run to $90 for the half-marathon. Click here to register.

Waterfront walking tour

Guides from the Downtown Waterfront Alliance will lead a Pints, Myths and Maritime spirits walk along the waterfront starting at 5 p.m. Thursday Sept. 10. The walk begins at Directions Apparel, 3026 Harborview Dr., and ends at 7Seas Brewing, with stops at historic sites like the Skansie Netshed, Harbor WildWatch, the Gig Harbor Marina and Boatyard and the Maritime Pier. Tickets cost $30 for adults or $10 for kids under 12 and include a beverage at the starting and ending locations.

Award-winning watercolorist Ron Snowden is Ebb Tide Gallery’s guest artist for September. Snowden is a member of the American Watercolor Society and a Signature Member of the Northwest Watercolor Society. He teaches art classes at the Asia Pacific Cultural Center in Tacoma.

Ebb Tide’s featured member artist is Pat Askren, whose work is inspired by her grandfather, a Norwegian fisherman who settled in Gig Harbor and often sketched birds, animals and fish on tiny scraps of paper for her enjoyment and inspiration. Ebb Tide is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 7809 Pioneer Way.

At the Gig Harbor Library

Attorneys from TacomaProBono will be at the library from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8, to provide free guidance on civil issues like family law, debt, wills, housing and Pierce County’s Eviction Prevention program.

Gig Harbor Now’s Enchanted Forest fundraiser takes place Wednesday, Sept. 23, at Kopahuck State Park, with dinner, an auction and entertainment by stand-up comedian Jerry Miner. Fun and games

Two Purdy establishments will host watch parties for the Seattle Seahawks’ season opener, a Super Bowl rematch against the New England Patriots, on Wednesday, Sept. 9. Both the Beer Vault (14004 Purdy Dr.) and The Float (14511 Sherman Dr.) host parties for the game, which kicks off at 5:20 p.m.

The Vault will also host tailgate parties before Gig Harbor and Peninsula high school football home games, starting with the Seahawks’ game against Franklin Pierce on Thursday, Sept. 10.

The Beer Vault hosts trivia at 6:30 p.m. Thursdays.

Ocean5 has family bingo at 5:30 p.m. Wednesdays and Let’s Get Quizzical trivia at 6 p.m. Thursdays.

Ocean5 will host a Princess for a Day party for little girls from noon to 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 13, with a storybook world of sparkle, stories, games and enchanted activities. Tickets are $25 here. Ocean5 is located at 5268 Point Fosdick Dr. NW.

Locust Cider has trivia at 6 p.m. Tuesdays and a Harborcade Women’s Pinball Tournament at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept 10. The $5 entry fee includes all the games, with prizes and giveaways. Signups are at 6 p.m.; flippers up at 6:30 p.m.

Hidden Harbor Wine Library has bingo Mondays and canasta Thursday, both starting at 4:30 p .m. at 8805 N. Harborview Dr. Suite 204.

Live music

Auditions are open for the 2026-’27 season of the Harbor Winds orchestra. The orchestra is especially looking for clarinet, bassoon, percussion, trumpet and flute players. Find information here.

Peninsula Community Chorus will hold an open meeting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8, to introduce its music for the upcoming holiday concert. PCC is an all-inclusive community choir dedicated to bringing the joy of choral music to the Gig Harbor area. Adults of all ages and abilities are welcome. Click here for information. Rehearsals will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays.

Chrissy provides the tunes at Hop Pharm at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8. The Gigsters play at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9. The Pharm is at 3216 Judson St.

Kimball Coffeehouse hosts an open mic every Thursday with sign-ups at 5:30 pm. and music at 6 p.m. On Friday, Sept. 11 it’s the Jim Valley Project, with music starting at 7 p.m.

KC and the Sound play Motown, modern rock and country tunes at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11 at the Olalla Winery. Tickets are $20 here.

At the movies

SummerFest movies at the Galaxy Theatres in Uptown wrap up this week with “Kung Fu Panda 4,” showing at 11:45 a.m. and 2:15 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8; 11:10 a.m. and 1:40 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9; and 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10. Tickets are just $3.50.

The Flashback Cinema film at the Galaxy on Wednesday, Sept. 9, is “Pacific Rim” showing at 6 p.m. On Sunday, Sept. 13, it’s an extended version of “The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.” Showtimes are 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 13 and 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 16. Flashback tickets are just $7.

This week’s Friday Night Fright film is “Christine,” about a boy who buys a strange car that has an evil mind of its own. Showtime is 8:45 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11. Fright Night tickets are just $6.

Farley Franger, Ruth Roman and Robert Walker star in the Galaxy Classic movie on Monday, Sept. 14, “Strangers on the Train” (1951). Showtime is 10 a.m. with tickets for just $5.

Also on Monday, Sept. 14 the Galaxy presents a Mystery Movie, the title of which isn’t revealed until showtime at 7 p.m. It’s perfect for movie lovers who like surprises and discovering unexpected gems. Tickets are just $5.

Civic engagement

The Gig Harbor City Council meets at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 14, at in the Civic Center, 3510 Grandview St. Agenda items include the first reading of an ordinance adopting a Multi-Family Tax Exemption Program. Council meetings can also be via Zoom.
