Harbor Happenings: Teen Masquerade Ball is Saturday at GHHS

Middle school and high school students between the ages of 12 and 17 are invited to dance the night away Saturday, Jan. 27, at PenMet Parks’ annual Teen Masquerade Ball.

The evening of costumes, dancing and refreshments at Gig Harbor High School starts at 7 p.m. Tickets cost $12. Bring your own mask, or borrow one at the dance. Click here to register.

Live music

  • Mark Hurwitz brings his Gin Creek Band to Kimball Coffehouse on Friday, Jan. 26, to play jazz and blues. The free all-ages show starts at 7 p.m. The band features a rotating mix of local musicians.
  • Kimball also hosts open mic nights on Thursdays. Signups start at 5:30 p.m.
  • Local singer-songwriter Sweet Mary Farr plays the Olalla Winery at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 26. Click here for reservations.

At the movies

  • The Flashback Cinema movie at Galaxy Theaters Uptown on Wednesday, Jan. 24, is “Interstellar,” a futuristic tale of a team of astronauts’ search for a new home after an agricultural famine devastates Earth. The move won an Oscar for Best Visual Effects. Showtimes are 11:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. Sunday’s Flashback movie is “Titanic’ showing at 11:15 a.m. and 6 p.m. Flashback Cinema tickets cost just $5. 
  • The Met’s film rendition of Bizet’s “Carmen” shows at the Galaxy at 9:55 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 27. Director Carrie Cracknell stages the action in modern times with today’s social issues. Mezzo-soprano Aigul Akhmetshina plays the title role, alongside tenor Piotr Beczała as Carmen’s troubled lover Don José, soprano Angel Blue as the loyal Micaëla, and bass-baritone Kyle Ketelsen as the swaggering Escamillo. Daniele Rustioni conducts Bizet’s iconic score.
  • The Gig Harbor Film Festival’s Monday Night Movie for January is “Aftersun,” starting Paul Mescal. Sophie, 11, treasures rare time together with her loving and idealistic father, Calum (Mescal). As a world of adolescence creeps into view, beyond her eye Calum struggles under the weight of life outside of fatherhood. Twenty years later, Sophie’s tender recollections of their last holiday become a powerful and heart-rending portrait of their relationship, as she tries to reconcile the father she knew with the man she didn’t. “Aftersun” plays at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 29. Maritime Gig on the horizon

The Gig Harbor Chamber is accepting applications for the 2024 Maritime Gig Festival Grand Parade, scheduled for June 1. This year’s theme is “Come Together.” Non-profit organizations and business groups are invited to apply. Click here to apply.

Civic engagement

  • The Harbor History Museum is conducting a short online survey to gauge thoughts about the future of the old Masonic Lodge near Crescent Creek Park.   • The Gig Harbor City Council will meet for a study session at 3 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 25, at the Civic Center on Grandview Street. The agenda includes discussion of proposed changes to the city’s Building Code to reflect 2021 legislative updates and creation of a redundant water main for St. Anthony Hospital. The council also will discuss a proposed levy lid lift on property tax revenues. The meeting can be accessed via Zoom.
