Harbor Happenings: Music in the air

Music is in the air all around Gig Harbor this week.

  • Music students from throughout the Peninsula School District will perform at the District Jazz Festival at Peninsula High School starting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 9. The festival features jazz ensembles from Gig Harbor and Peninsula High Schools, plus bands from all four middle schools. Admission is free. The festival will be in the PHS auditorium, 14105 Purdy Drive.
  • The duo Go Two plays rock, soul, pop and country classics at Olalla Winery at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 10. Make reservations here.
  • The Narrows Music Society’s 2023 Young Artists concert, featuring members of the Harbor Winds Concert Band and 24 area high school and middle school musicians, is scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, at Lighthouse Christian School, 3008 36th Street.  Admission is free.

Night to Shine

After a three-year hiatus due to the COVID pandemic, Gig Harbor’s “Night to Shine” returns on Friday, Feb. 10.

Night to Shine is a world-wide event, sponsored by the Tim Tebow Foundation, that celebrates people with special needs. For more than 200 local residents, it’s a prom night complete with dinner, dancing and a red carpet experience in which every participant will be crowned prom king or queen.

The event is sponsored by Harbor Christian Center and takes place at the Tom Taylor YMCA, 10550 Harbor Hill Drive, starting at 5 p.m.

Night to Shine returns Friday, Feb. 10.

Deadline extended for kids talent show

 The deadline to enter the Gig Harbor Has Talent showcase for local elementary and middle school-aged kids has been extended to Feb. 12.

The showcase is open to kids with a variety of talents, including dancing, singing, playing a musical instrument, stand-up comedy, martial arts, magic or something completely different. Sponsored by the Gig Harbor Kiwanis Club, the event will take place Saturday, March 25, at Swift Water Elementary School. Click here to apply, which includes uploading a video.

  • The Gig Harbor Literary Society book club will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 7, at the Harbor History Museum. This month’s book is Beverly Cleary’s “My Own Two Feet.” The 1995 memoir covers about 15 years of Cleary’s life (1935-1950) through the Depression, college, jobs and other events. Book club meetings are free and open to all book-lovers.
  • Flashback Cinema for Wednesday, Feb. 8, stars Doris Day and ­­­Rock Hudson in “Pillow Talk” at 12:30, 3:30 and 6 p.m. at the Galaxy Theatres in Gig Harbor Uptown. Sunday’s Flashback movie is “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban” at 11:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. Flashback Cinema tickets cost just $5.

Civic engagement

  • Thursday, Feb. 9: The Gig Harbor City Council will meet in a study session at 3 p.m. at the Civic Center, 3510 Grandview Street. Agenda items include a discussion of naming rights for the Sports Complex, an update on the city’s Climate Action Plan, and a review of the 2023 capital improvement projects schedule.   • Saturday, Feb. 11: The Gig Harbor City Council will meet for a daylong retreat, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Harbor History Museum, 4121 Harborview Drive. Click here to watch via Zoom.
  • Monday, Feb. 13: The Gig Harbor City Council will meet at 5:30 p.m. at the Civic Center. The agenda includes a public hearing on proposed new regulations for short-term rentals.
