Harbor Happenings | Lecture discusses traditional Croatian clothing

Like those of many other cultures, Croatian folk costumes are often richly embellished with embroidery, beading, leather-working and unique weaving techniques. Learn about some of the Croatian garments in Harbor History Museum’s collection at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, June 11, at “Threads of Tradition,” a presentation by folklore specialist John Morovich.

Morivich is artistic director of the Seattle Junior Tamburitzans and is well-known for his knowledge of Croatian traditions. Admission is free for museum members or $5 for nonmembers. RSVP to [email protected]. The museum is at 4121 Harborview Dr.

Waterfront walks

Local nonprofits lead walks along the downtown Gig Harbor waterfront several times each week.

On Wednesdays, the Skiffs to Spirits walk explores the links between Gig Harbor’s rich history and today’s vibrant culture. The free, all-ages tour is approximately one mile long. It starts at 5:30 p.m. at Harbor History Museum and ends at the Midway Café at the corner of Harborview Drive and Pioneer Way. Walkers need to arrange return transportation. Harbor WildWatch, Harbor History Museum and the Gig Harbor Downtown Waterfront Alliance organize the tours.

The Waterfront Alliance will host a guided Pints, Myths and Maritime Spirits walk along the waterfront at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, June 11. The tour starts at Direction Apparel, 3026 Harborview Dr., and goes to 7Seas Brewing, 2905 Harborview Dr. Stops include the Skansie Netshed, Harbor WildWatch, the Gig Harbor Marina and Boatyard and other historic sites. These half-mile walks take place the second Thursday of each month. Tickets are $10 for kids 12 and under or $30 for adults.

Harbor WildWatch volunteers lead a Wonders of the Waterfront walk at 10 a.m. Saturdays. The walk goes from  Donkey Creek Park, 8714 North Harborview Dr., to the old ferry landing at the end of Harborview Drive. The free tour focuses on the diversity of life and the natural history of the waterfront.

Farmers market

The Waterfront Farmers Market returns from 1 to 6 p.m. Thursday, June 11, at Skansie Brothers Park. Clete Williams and Chrissy provide the music. Free parking is available at the Church of Latter-day Saints on Rosedale Street and the Methodist Church on Pioneer Way, with free shuttle service to and from to the market.

Plant swap

Gardeners will get together at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 13, in Uptown Gig Harbor to share plants, seeds, tools, books and other gardening-related items. All are welcome at this one-hour swap. If you don’t have something to trade, consider bringing cookies or candy or little envelopes for the seed-collectors. It’s all free. Uptown is at 4701 Point Fosdick Dr.

Electronics recycling event

Black Rock Recycling will collect old electronics from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 13, at Swift Water Elementary School, 10811 Harbor Hill Dr. Bring computers, cellphones and home phones, TVs, cameras, printers, copiers, scanners, fax machines, microwaves, computer components and parts and even some appliances (no refrigerators or freezers). This is a free event.

Row the Porpoise

The Gig Harbor BoatShop’s Community Rowing Program is an opportunity to pull an oar on the replica of the 10-oared captain’s gig “Porpoise” that first entered Gig Harbor in 1841. All are welcome, even if you’ve never rowed. A veteran BoatShop skipper leads each voyage. They begin at 2 p.m. Sundays through Labor Day. It’s free, but reservations are required.

World Cup watch parties

Hop Pharm, 8805 Harborview Dr., Suite 204, will host watch parties during many FIFA men’s World Cup matches. This week’s parties take place at noon Thursday, June 11; noon Friday, June 12 (Canada vs. Bosnia-Herzegovina); and 6 p.m. Friday, June 12 (USA vs Paraguay).

Pride Month

The Gig Harbor Library, 4424 Point Fosdick Dr., hosts a free Humanities Washington program, “The Struggle for Gay and Lesbian Adoption Rights,” at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 13. Two women will tell their story of having a child in 1986. Their landmark court case secured parenting rights for same-sex couples in Washington.

Fun and games

Locust Cider, 3207 57th St. Ct., hosts Trivia Night at 6 p.m. Wednesdays. Locust also hosts an IFPA Women’s Pinball Tournament at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, June 11, with prizes and giveaways. Sign-ups at 6 p.m. $5 entry fee.

Hidden Harbor Wine Library, 8805 N. Harborview Dr. Suite 204, has bingo every Monday and canasta every Thursday, all starting at 4:30 p.m. The Wine Library hosts GlobeTilt Trivia at 6 p.m. Friday.

Ocean5, 5268 Point Fosdick Dr., has comedy night starting at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 11, with Big Irish Jay Hollingsworth for ages 18 and older.

The Beer Vault, 14004 Purdy Dr., has trivia at 6:30 p.m. Thursdays. On Monday, June 15, the Vault will have line dancing led by Christy Palmer, with classes at 6:30 p.m. and dancing following. Cost is $10 per class, with no reservations needed.

The Float, 14511 Sherman Dr. NW in Purdy, has karaoke at 8 p.m. Fridays.

Live music

The Gigsters take the stage at Hop Farm at 6 p.m. Wednesday, June 10, at 8805 Harborview Dr. Suite 204.

The Goodman Middle School choir and band will present end of year concerts this week. The choir performs at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 9, and the band plays at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, June 11. Both events stat are at the school, 3701 38th Ave.

Chris Hasbrook plays country and rock at 6:30 p.m. Friday, June 12, at the Beer Vault, 14004 Purdy Dr.

Kimball Coffeeshop has an open mic every Thursday, with signups at 5:30 and music at 6 p.m. Mark Hurwitz and Gin Creek play at 7 p.m. Friday, June 12, at Kimball.

Mark Lewis brings his jazz band to the Olalla Winery Friday, June 12, with Lewis on sax and flute, John Hansen on piano, Kirk Kuykendall on bass and Bob Merrihew on drums. The show starts at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 here.

At the movies

The SummerFest movie at the Galaxy Theatres in Uptown this week is “Shaun the Sheep” showing at 10:10 a.m. and 12:35 p.m. Tuesday, June 9; and 10 a.m. and 12:20 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, June 10 and 11. Starting Friday, June 12, it’s “Shrek 2.” Showtimes are 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Friday, June 12; 10 a.m. Saturday and Sunday, June 13 and 14; 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, June 15 and 16. SummerFest movies are just $3.50.

The Flashback Cinema film at the Galaxy on Wednesday, June 10, is “Clueless,” showing at 6 p.m. On Sunday, June 14 it’s “Evil Dead II,” the indie cult classic of the horror comedy genre showing at 12:30 p.m. Flashback movies are just $7.

The Galaxy’s Friday Night Fright movie on June 12 is “Deep Blue Sea,” about scientists at an isolated research facility looking for a cure to Alzheimer’s disease who become prey as a trio of intelligent sharks fights back. Showtime is 8:45 p.m. Fright Night films are just $6.

This week’s Galaxy Classic is “The Shop Around the Corner” (1940) starring Margaret Sullivan and James Stewart as employees at a gift shop who can barely stand each other, without realizing that they are falling in love through the mail as each other’s anonymous pen pal. Showtime is 10 a.m. Galaxy Classic tickets are just $5.

Civic engagement

Attorneys from TacomaProbono will answer questions about eviction, family law, landlord-tenant issues and other issues at a free legal aid popup from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 9, at the Civic Center, 3510 Grandview St.

The Gig Harbor City Council meets for a study session at 3 p.m. Thursday, June 11 at the Civic Center. Tentative agenda items include a presentation from Pierce County about a unified regional approach to homelessness; the city Planning Commission’s recommendation for a Critical Areas Ordinance; and a review of proposed moorage agreements and regulations for the city’s Commercial Fishing Homeport.

Also on June 11, the Design Review Board will review proposed renovations to Gig Harbor High School’s track and field area. The meeting takes place at 5:30 pm. at the Civic Center. City meetings can be accessed via Zoom.
