Harbor Happenings | Maritime Gig, farmers market week 2 and more
One of the biggest, most popular events of the year is this weekend along the downtown Gig Harbor waterfront: the Maritime Gig Festival.

Festivities kick off at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, June 6, with a free pancake breakfast at Skansie Park, sponsored by the Gig Harbor Kiwanis Club.
The Maritime Gig Grande Parade starts at 10 a.m. Saturday, with local clubs and organizations (including Gig Harbor Now) marching down Harborview Drive from the Harbor History Museum to Judson Street.
Although most events take place around Skansie Park, Harbor History Museum is the venue for the free Waves and Wheels Vintage Car and Boat Show from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday. The museum is located at 4121 Harborview Drive. The show is free.

Saturday’s live music line-up at the Skansie Park pavilion includes local favorites My Guilty Pleasure, The Profits, Kim Archer Band, 90’s Rewind and The Infinity Project.
Sunday activities include the Wheels on the Water car show along Harborview Drive and up Pioneer Way to Tarabochia Street. At 1 p.m. Sunday, boats of all shapes and sizes will gather on the water at Skansie Park for the annual Blessing of the Fleet by the parish priest from Saint Nicholas Catholic Church, with help from the Knights of Columbus. The Blessing invokes a safe journey and bountiful catch for the commercial fishing fleet on their annual trek to Alaska.
Sunday’s music line up starts at 10:30 a.m. with Illusions of Elvis, plus Mark Hurwitz and the Gin Creek Band and Mara and the Charm providing the tunes for the remainder of the day at Skansie Park.

Yacht club barbecue
The Gig Harbor Yacht Club, 8209 Stinson Ave., will host a get-together for prospective club members immediately following Saturday’s Gig Fest parade, with free smash burgers, hot dogs and sides. If you’re interested in boating and looking for a welcoming on-the-water community, stop by to learn more about the Yacht Club and enjoy free eats. Registration is required. Sign up here.
Olalla Winery anniversary celebration
Olalla Winery, 13176 Olalla Valley Road, will celebrate its 10th anniversary from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday, June 6. Winery owner Mary Ellen Houston is hosting the event that includes live music by Ten Strings and a Box, free pizza and other treats from The Garnishing Chef, a celebration cake and a variety of vendors including a permanent jewelry pop-up and a piercing pop-up.
Book discussion
The Gig Harbor Literary Society meets at 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 2, at Harbor History museum to discuss “American Chica: Two Worlds, One Childhood” by Marie Arana. All are welcome at book group discussions, whether or not you’ve read the book. The museum is located at 4121 Harborview Drive.
Farmers market
The weekly Waterfront Farmers Market is from 1 to 6 p.m. Thursday, June 4, at Skansie Park.
The market features fresh produce, berries, flowers, baked goods, prepared food, arts and crafts and other offerings from area providers and makers, plus activities for kids and live music. A free shuttle loops between the market on Harborview Drive, the Church of Latter-day Saints parking lot on Rosedale Street and the Methodist Church on Pioneer Way. The ADA-accessible shuttle runs approximately every 10 to 15 minutes. Parking is free at both churches.

Fun and games
Locust Cider, 3207 57th St. Ct., hosts Trivia Night at 6 p.m. Wednesday, June 3.
Ocean5, 5268 Point Fosdick Dr., will have Ocean Trivia games starting at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 4, in honor of World Ocean Day.
The Beer Vault, 14004 Purdy Drive, has Music Bingo at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 3, and trivia games at 6:30 p.m. Thursdays. The Vault will host an open mic at 6:30 p.m. Friday, June 5, led by Shawn Pratt of Northwest Chill. All ages and skill levels are welcome.
A cribbage tournament takes place at the Vault at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 7, for casual players, seasoned pros and folks who just want to learn the game. Bring your board, or use one of the Vault’s.
Hidden Harbor Winery, 8805 N. Harborview Dr. Suite 204, hosts bingo at 4:30 p.m. Mondays.
School concerts
The Gig Harbor High School bands perform their end-of-the-year concerts this week.
The GHHS jazz band plays at 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 3, while the the concert bands and percussion group play at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 4. All performances will be in the GHHS auditorium, 5101 Rosedale St. The band will also march in the Maritime Gig Parade at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 6, and will play at the school’s graduation ceremony at Cheney Stadium in Tacoma on Saturday, June 20.
The Goodman Middle School choir performs its end-of-the-year concert at 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 9, at the school, 3701 38th Ave. The Goodman and Kopachuck Middle School bands will join together to create “The Rising Tides Marching Band” in the Maritime Gig Parade.
Live music
Kimball Coffeehouse hosts an open mic every Thursday, with signups at 5:30 and music at 6 p.m. Stevie and the Blue Flames will play the blues at Kimball at 7 p.m. Friday, June 5. The band was selected as the Washington Blues Society’s Best Band in 2015 and is a member of the WBS Hall of Fame.
At the movies
The SummerFest movie at the Galaxy Theatres in Uptown is “How to Train Your Dragon,” showing at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 2; 11:55 a.m. and 3 p.m. Wednesday June 3; and 10 a.m. and 1:05 p.m. Thursday, June 4. Starting Friday, June 5, it’s “Shaun the Sheep” showing at 10 a.m. and 12:20 p.m.; 10 a.m. Saturday and Sunday, June 6 and 7; and 10 a.m. and 12:20 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, June 8 and 9. SummerFest tickets are just $3.50.
The Flashback Cinema movie at the Galaxy on June 3 is “Batman,” the 1989 film starring Michael Keaton, Kim Basinger and Jack Nicholson. Showtime is 6 p.m. Flashback tickets are just $7.
The Galaxy Classic movie for Monday, June 8 is “Rebel Without a Cause” (1955) with James Dean as a rebellious young man with a past who comes to a new town and finds friends and enemies. Showtime is 10 a.m. Classic movies are just $5.
Opera lovers will enjoy the Met’s encore performance of “El Último Sueño de Frida y Diego” showing at 1 and 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 3. It’s the story of Mexico’s legendary painters, Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera.

Civic engagement
The Gig Harbor City Council meets at 5:30 p.m. Monday, June 8, at the Civic Center, 3510 Grandview St. Tentative agenda items include a public hearing on revisions to the city’s sign code, approval of a contract for Phase 2 of the 38th Avenue Improvement Project and approval of a tourism promotion agreement.
