Harbor Happenings | Music in the air at Gig Harbor High

Harbor Winds takes a nautical musical journey at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 8, at the Gig Harbor High School auditorium, 5101 Rosedale Street.

The free concert includes maritime-themed works by Sheldon, Persichetti, Vinther, Erickson, Whitacre, Sousa and more. Learn more about Harbor Winds and the Narrows Music Society here.

The Harbor Winds performance concludes a busy week of music at the high school.

The GHHS jazz band’s end-of-year Jazz Night concert starts at 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 4, at the school at 5101 Rosedale St. On June 5, all the GHHS bands join together in a performance, also at 7 p.m. at the school.

Maritime Gig Fest

Summer unofficially begins this weekend at the Maritime Gig Fest with a pancake breakfast, a parade, crafts booths, food vendors, live music, a car show, the annual blessing of the fishing fleet and more. Several downtown streets, including Harborview Drive and Pioneer Way, will be closed Saturday and Sunday, but free parking and shuttle service will be provided by Pierce Transit both days between the Kimball Street park and ride and Judson Street. The Gig Harbor Yacht Club, at 8209 Stinson Avenue, will host a barbecue and membership drive starting at noon Saturday, June 7, right after the Gig Fest parade. Potential club members will get a free lunch and reduced initiation fee. Make lunch reservations here.

Empowerment Through Understanding

In celebration of Pride Month, Fiona Cleveland and local inclusive families will lead a discussion dubbed LGBTQIA+ Empowerment Through Understanding beginning at 5 p.m. Wednesday, June 4, at the Gig Harbor Library, 4424 Point Fosdick Dr. The conversation is designed to promote an understanding of gender identity and how family support can empower LGBTQIA+ youth to feel resilient and build self-esteem. Geared to ages 18 and up. Registration is required.

Author visits

Captain Richard Bard will read from his books at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 5, at the Eddon Boathouse, 3805 Harborview Dr. Bard will read from “West of Spencer,” a fishing novel; “Red Flags in Blue Water,” an account of sea voyages that went south; “Tsiu Blue,” a memoir-ish fable set on the Gulf of Alaska coast that pushes the boundaries of plausibility; and his book of poetry, “Along the Fifty Fathom Line.” Buy tickets here.

Over at Invitation Bookshop’s new location at 3119 Judson Street, Emily Molina, author of “Tacoma’s Tall Ship” and Lisa Nikel, author of “Tugboat Sand Man” get together at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 7 to talk about their books and the process of writing. Free and family friendly.

Live music

Lakin provides the music at this week’s Waterfront Farmers Market that takes place from 1 to 6 p.m. Thursday at Skansie Park.

Friday, June 6, is open mic night at The Beer Vault. This week’s host is Shawn Pratt with Northwest Chill. All skill levels are welcome to share their talent starting at 6 p.m. On Saturday, June 7 at 7 p.m. KC and The Sound take the stage, blending timeless songs with storytelling charm. The Beer Vault is located at 14004 Purdy Drive.

Stephanie Anderson and Tim Raye play their “good music – good times” covers in the Olalla Winery loft Friday, June 6. Music starts at 6 p .m. Tickets are $15 here.

Steve Bailey and the Blue Flames play at Kimball Cofeehouse Friday, June 5. Doors open at 6 p.m.; music starts at 7 p.m. Free and family friendly.

At the movies

This week’s Summer Fest movie at the Galaxy Theatres in Uptown is “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” showing at 10 a.m. and 3:20 p.m. on Wednesday June 4, and 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Thursday, June 5.

The Summer Fest movie Friday, June 5 through Tuesday, June 10, is “Kung Fu Panda 4.” Showtimes: 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Friday, June 6; 10 a.m. Saturday and Sunday, June 7 and 8; and 10:15 a.m. and 4:15 p.m. Monday, June 9 and Tuesday, June 10. Summer Fest movies are just $2.

Sunday’s Flashback Cinema movie at the Galaxy is “Twilight,” the film version of the romantic thriller set in Forks. Showtimes are 11:45 a.m. and 6 p.m. Flashback movies are just $5. 

Civic engagement

The Gig Harbor parks commission meets at 5 p.m. Wednesday, June 4, at the Civic Center to review the city’s park volunteer program, donation program and parks code. The Civic Center is located at 3510 Grandview Street. The city planning commission meets Thursday, June 5, to continue a discussion of climate and resilience.

The Gig Harbor City Council meets at 5:30 p.m. Monday, June 9, at the Civic Center. The agenda includes a proclamation for Pride Month, the Waterfront Alliance’s annual report, a vote on the amended flag display policy, updates on the Commute Trip Reduction Plan and the Strategic Plan and approval of a contract for pavement maintenance and ADA improvements. Council meetings are held at the Civic Center and can also be accessed via Zoom.

Attorneys from TacomaProBono will provide free legal advice at a legal aid pop-up Tuesday, June 10, 4–6 p.m. at the Civic Center. Bring questions about eviction, landlord-tenant relationships, family law, civic law and consumer issues.
