Harbor Happenings | Chorus, orchestra, Harbor Winds perform spring concerts
Music lovers have plenty of options this week, with the Peninsula Community Chorus, Gig Harbor Peninsula Civic Orchestra and Narrows Music Society all planning spring concerts.

Peninsula Community Chorus presents “Songs of the Stage and Screen,” featuring popular tunes from movies and musicals, at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 30, at the Gig Harbor High School auditorium. The concert includes a raffle and post-show refreshments. Concert tickets are $10 general admission; $7 for students and seniors here. GHHS is at 5101 Rosedale St.

The Gig Harbor Peninsula Civic Orchestra’s “Summer Dreams” concert starts at 7 p.m. Saturday, May 30, at Peninsula High School, 4105 Purdy Dr. NW. The orchestra will perform Mendelssohn’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” “Summer Days Suite” by Eric Coats and music from blockbuster movies like “Wicked” and “How to Tame Your Dragon.” Admission is free.

The Narrows Music Society presents Harbor Winds’ “Glory” Young Artists concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 31, at Gig Harbor High School’s auditorium, 5101 Rosedale St. The concert features local honor band students and music by Michael Colgrass, Leonard Bernstein, Jay Bocook, Carol Brittin Chambers, JaRod Hall, Kevin Day and others. Admission is free, but donations are welcome. A free shuttle will run to and from GHHS for Key Peninsula residents. Shuttle seating is limited and reservations must be made by 10 a.m. Sunday, May 31, here.

Downtown clean-up
With the Maritime Gig Festival less than two weeks away, volunteers from the Gig Harbor Downtown Waterfront Alliance will get together Sunday, May 31, to spiff-up the area.
To lend a hand, meet at the Skansie Park pavilion at 9 a.m. Bring gloves and your tool of choice (rake, broom, pruning shears, shovel, etc.). Tools will also be available on site to borrow. Sign up here to help with the clean-up.
Pancake breakfast fundraiser
The Gig Harbor Lions Clubs will host a Pancakes for a Purpose fundraiser from 8 to 10 a.m. Saturday, May 30, at Applebee’s restaurant, 4827 Point Fosdick Drive. The event includes a full pancake breakfast, silent auction and raffle. Tickets are $12 per person and support the club’s purchase of a portable ultrasound machine for Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital. For ticket information, email [email protected].
Low tide beach walk
Harbor WildWatch hosts another low tide beach walk starting at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 30, at the Purdy Spit. WildWatch volunteers will explore and discuss the marine life that lives along local beaches.

Book discussion
The Gig Harbor Book Club meets at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 2, at Harbor History Museum to talk about “American Chica” by Marie Arana. The book is Arana’s exploration of her upbringing within two distinct cultures: the privileged, traditional life of her Peruvian father, and the individualistic, adventurous roots of her American mother in Wyoming. All are welcome at book group meetings, whether or not you’ve read the book. The museum is at 4121 Harborview Dr.
Live music
Angelina Adams and Jonathan Sherrill provide music at the Waterfront Farmers Market on Thursday, May 28. The market takes place from 1 to 6 p.m. Thursdays at Skansie Park, with dozens of vendors selling fresh produce, flowers, prepared food and arts and craft items. Visitors can park for free at the Church of Latter Day Saints on Rosedale Street or the Methodist Church on Pioneer Way and ride a free shuttle to the market.
Chris Klein plays a mix of blues, country and rock at at 7 p.m. Saturday, May 30, at the Beer Vault, 14004 Purdy Dr.
Olalla Winery presents a Christian songwriters workshop at 6:30 p.m. Friday, May 29. Dave Thomas (Shy Boys), Ken Tobias (Wounded Mic), Scott MacGougan (Two Macs & Friends) and storyteller Mike Parsons will talk about how songs happen. Tickets are $20 here.
Kimball Coffeehouse hosts an open mic every Thursday, with signups at 5:30 p.m.
Harbor Ukulele Group gets together at 11 a.m. Saturdays at the Gig Harbor Library, 4424 Point Fosdick Dr., to share songs. Newcomers are always welcome.
Fun and games
Ryan Niemiller and Samuel J. Comroe bring their “Almost Perfect Comedy Tour,” from America’s Got Talent fame, to Ocean5, at 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday, May 28 and May 29. Ocean5 is at 5268 Point Fosdick Dr. Ages 21-plus.
Locust Cider hosts Trivia Night from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays at 3207 57th St. Ct. (next to the Inn at Gig Harbor.) On Friday, May 29 it’s Cider and Salsa, with dance lessons at 7 p.m. and dancing from 7:30 to 10:30. Tickets for Cider and Salsa are $15 in advance or $20 at the door. Sign up here.
Monday is bingo night at Hidden Harbor Wine Library, starting at 4:30 p.m. 8805 N. Harborview Dr. Suite 204.

At the movies
“Racing Stripes” is the SummerFest movie at the Galaxy Theatres in Uptown at 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 26; 1 and 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 27; and 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Thursday, May 28. Beginning Friday, May 29, it’s “How to Train Your Dragon” showing at 10 a.m. and 1:05 p.m.; at 9:50 a.m. on Sunday, May 31; and 10 a.m. and 1:05 p.m. on Monday June 1 and Tuesday, June 2. There is also a sensory friendly show Saturday, May 30 at 10:15 a.m. SummerFest movies are just $3.50.
The Flashback Cinema movie at the Galaxy on Wednesday is “Grease” starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John. Showtime is 6 p.m. on May 27. The Flashback movie Sunday, May 31, is “Batman” with Michael Keaton as Batman, Kim Basinger as photo-journalist Vicki Vale and Jack Nicholson as the wonderfully maniacal Joker. Showtime is 12:50 p.m. Flashback movies are just $5.
The Friday Night Fright movie on May 29 is “The Blob” (1988) about a deadly entity from space that crash-lands near a small town and begins consuming everyone in its path. Showtime is 8:45 p.m. Fright Night tickets are just $6.
Saturday, May 30, the Galaxy will show the Metropolitan Opera’s rendition of “El Último Sueño de Frida y Diego” – a musical portrait of Mexico’s painterly power couple Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. Showtime on Saturday, May 30 is 10 a.m.
The Galaxy Classic movie Monday, June 1 is “On the Town” (1949), featuring Gene Kelly and Frank Sinatra as sailors on 24-hour shore leave in New York City, looking for fun and romance. Showtime is 10 a.m. Classic movie tickets are just $5.
Civic engagement
U.S. Rep. Emily Randall, D-Bremerton, will host a town hall at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 27, in the Gig Harbor High School library. Doors open at 4 p.m. The event will spotlight members of Randall’s Youth Leadership Council. GHHS is located at 5101 Rosedale St.
The city of Gig Harbor will host a public hearing on the Commercial Fishermen’s Homeport at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 2, at the Civic Center, 3510 Grandview St. The homeport at Ancich Waterfront Park, 3589 Harborview Dr., would include a 280-foot main walk float; 15 60-foot finger floats; two 80-foot finger floats; an 80-foot gangway; and installation of fender piles. It also includes removal of the existing Jerkovich Pier and creosote piles, and shoreline mitigation such as beach nourishment and stormwater outfall restoration.
