Harbor Happenings | Witches hit the water on Saturday

The annual Witches Brew paddle through the harbor takes place on Saturday, Oct. 18.

Paddlers in stand-up paddle boards and kayaks will meet at the public boat launch on Randal Street at 2 p.m. (You can also launch from anywhere in the harbor and meet up at the Randal Street launch). A cauldron at the launch site will collect donations for Gig Harbor Peninsula FISH Food Bank.

Paddlers will stop at Jerisich Park en route to the lighthouse at the mouth of the harbor to hand out candy to trick-or-treaters. Costumes are encouraged.

Another No Kings demonstration

Indivisible Gig Harbor, a progressive political group, is coordinating a second No Kings demonstration from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, at the intersection of Point Fosdick and Olympic drives.

The local protest is part of a nationwide day of pro-democracy action. At least 1,000 people attended the first local No Kings demonstration in June.

Cemetery tours

Some of Gig Harbor’s pioneer history is written in the stones at Artondale Cemetery.

Learn about it during tours of the cemetery at 1:30 and 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 19. Two tours take place during each time slot. Each tour is limited to 20 people and tickets are required for every person, regardless of age.

Pier into the Night

Join Harbor WildWatch at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15, for a peek at what’s lurking in the water beneath the pier at 7Seas Brewing.

Divers will use an remotely operated vehicle to livestream the sea life they encounter, while WildWatch biologists on the pier identify what’s being shown on a big screen. Watch for giant pacific octopus, sculpin, gunnels, tube worms, nudibranchs and any number of crab species. Dress for the weather.

WildWatch fundraiser

Auctioneers from Stokes Auction will lead the bidding for tropical vacations, private parties, artwork and more at the Make Waves fundraiser for Harbor WildWatch at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, at Ocean5, 5268 Point Fosdick Dr. Tickets are $125 here.

Wine, etc.

Hidden Harbor Wine Library, 8805 North Harborview Dr., suite 204, will host a sampling of Washington wines paired with artisan chocolates from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 16. Tickets are $80, available here.

Two Loons Winery will have five of their most popular wines available for sampling Wednesday, Oct. 15 at The Beer Vault, 14004 Purdy Drive. Try the winery’s 2023 alvarinho, 2018 syrah, 2018 merlot, 2020 cabernet sauvignon and 2020 malbec. Tasting starts at 5 p.m. with a $10 fee.

Live music

The True Romans play classic blues, rock and contemporary tunes at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct 17 at Kimball Coffeehouse. Kimball also hosts an open mic at 6 p.m. Thursdays. Doors open an hour before the events.

The Hook Me Up band takes the stage at the Olalla Winery at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17 with danceable pop, rock, jazz, Latin and blues. Tickets cost $20. Reserve them here.

Also at the Olalla Winery, craft a holiday ornament from wine corks Sunday, Oct. 19, 2-to-4 p.m. The $25 class fee includes all supplies and instruction. Charcuterie baskets and wine will be available for purchase. Reserve space here.

On Friday, Oct. 17, Ocean5 has live “Cascade Country” music with Aron Crawford starting at 7:30 p.m. This is a 21-plus event. Ocean5 is located at 5268 Point Fosdick Dr.

At the movies

The Flashback Cinema movie at the Galaxy Theatres in Uptown on Wednesday, Oct. 15, is “Corpse Bride,” showing at 12:45 and 6 p.m. On Sunday, Oct. 18, the Flashback movie is “The Phantom of the Opera,” showing at 12:40 p.m. Flashback movies are just $5.

The Galaxy’s Spooky Series movie on Thursday, Oct 16 is “The Box Trolls” showing at 10 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Starting Friday, Oct. 17, the Spooky Movie is “Monster House,” at 10 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Friday, Oct 17; 10 am. Saturday, Oct. 18 and Sunday, Oct. 19; 10:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 20 and Tuesday, Oct. 21. Spooky Series movies are just $2.

The Friday Fright movie on Oct. 17 is “Return of the Living Dead.” An army of corpses arise from their graves with a ravenous hunger for human brains, after a secret U.S. military canister of toxic gas is accidentally released. Showtime is 8:45 p.m. Friday Fright movies are just $5.

Civic engagement

The Gig Harbor City Council meets for a study session at 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 16 at the Civic Center, 3510 Grandview St. Tentative agenda items include a discussion of the 2026 state legislative session and a review of  proposed tiered water rates.

The city Planning Commission meets at 5:30 p.m.  Thursday, Oct. 16, to discuss Phase 2 code development. City meetings can also be viewed via Zoom.
