Harbor Happenings: First Bike Bash set for Saturday

Posted on May 18th, 2022 By:

The first PenMet Parks Bike Bash pedals into Sehmel Homestead Park this weekend.

The event, described as a “celebration of all things cycling,” is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 21. The event is free.

Planned activities include:

  • A bicycle rodeo skills course for kids.
  • A “traffic garden,” which helps children learn to navigate stop signs, crosswalks and other potential road hazards.
  • Group rides for adults and families. These are led by the Cascade Bicycle Club. To participate, sign up here.
  • Basic bicycle maintenance demonstrations.
  • Free helmets and fittings while supplies last.
  • A bicycle swap, where vendors will trade complete bicycles, bike parts and collectibles.
  • Bike-related vendors, food, entertainment and more.

A few things to know if you plan to attend:

Sehmel has about 200 available parking spots. Try parking at Gig Harbor High School and taking the free shuttle from there to the event. The shuttle will run all day, with the first run leaving around 9:50 a.m.

Bicycles will be available to borrow, but families are encouraged to bring their own if possible. All activities on a cycle require use of a helmet. They will be available at Bike Bash while supplies last.

Volunteers are still needed to help with the bicycle rodeo, traffic garden and other activities. If you’re interested, click here.

Outdoors for All will be on hand to provide adaptive bikes. Fill out a liability waiver form here.

Little Boats: Homegrown Innovation

If you haven’t checked out the Little Boats exhibit at Harbor History Museum, you should do that soon. The special exhibition runs through May.

The exhibit features a range of full-size, model and toy boats, including Avanti, which is featured in Small Boats Magazine, and a classic 14-foot Torpedo runabout from AristoCraft. These speedsters are coupled with a small, older boat used to take goods to market and a half-sized seine skiff just right for kids to step aboard.

The museum is at 4121 Harborview Drive. Current hours are Thursday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free, compliments of the city of Gig Harbor. For more information, call (253) 858-6722 or visit www.HarborHistoryMuseum.org.
