Harbor Happenings | People with special needs get a Night to Shine
Young people with special needs will be honored at the Night to Shine starting at 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 13, at the Tom Taylor YMCA, 10550 Harbor Hill Dr.
The event includes dancing, food, limo rides, prom photos, karaoke and other fun activities. This year’s Night to Shine is being billed as a Sneakers Ball. Everyone is asked to wear soft-soled sneakers – decked out with colorful paint, baubles and other bright, shiny embellishments – or plain, unadorned sneakers. Just no dress shoes this year, please.

Student walk-out
Students from Peninsula and Gig Harbor high schools are planning walk-outs to protest immigration enforcement tactics on Friday, Feb. 13.
Peninsula students plan to meet at the high school flagpole at 10:30 a.m. and walk to the Purdy Spit. Gig Harbor students plan to walk downtown starting at noon.
Similar walk-outs are reportedly planned at local middle schools.
Cocktails and Fishtales
Harbor WildWatch’s Cocktails and Fishtales program on Wednesday, Feb. 11, called “Love in the Salish Sea,” features WildWatch Education Director Rachel Easton discussing “the racy, romantic and ridiculous ways” that marine critters reproduce. The program starts at 6 p.m. at Ocean5, 5268 Point Fosdick Dr. Admission is free to WildWatch members, with a suggested donation of $10 for non-members. No reservations needed.
Get creative
Harbor History Museum will host a Valentine’s Day card-making party at 4 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 12. Organizers will provide craft supplies and pink mocktails will be available for purchase. Museum admission is free during the card-making event. The museum is located at 4121 Harborview Dr.
The Beer Vault, 14004 Purdy Dr. NW, will host a Sweet Valentine’s cookie decorating workshop from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 15. Techniques like wet-on-wet, flooding, sectioning and piping details will be covered in the class, and cookies, icing, decorating supplies and a festive take-home box will be provided. Waterfront walk
Learn about Gig Harbor’s maritime history in a walking tour of the downtown waterfront at 5 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 12. The “Pints, Myths and Maritime Spirits” guided walk starts at Direction Apparel and includes special access to the Skansie netshed and Harbor WildWatch, plus stops at the Maritime Pier and the historic Egg and Poultry Cooperative building. The tour ends at 7Seas Brewing around 7 p.m. Tickets are $30 for adults; $10 for kids 12 and under and include one beverage at the starting and ending locations. Buy tickets here.
Galentine’s Day
In anticipation of Valentine’s Day, The Beer Vault, 14004 Purdy Dr. NW, hosts a “dress-to-impress” soirée complete with treats, drink specials and shopping opportunities at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11. On Saturday, Feb. 14, The Beer Vault hosts a wine and truffle tasting party. Tickets cost $45 each or $80 per couple.
Ocean5 hosts a Galentine’s Day party Friday, Feb. 13, for everyone single, taken or somewhere in between, with music by The Profits. Buy tickets here.
At the museum
Harbor History Museum’s new exhibit, “Filipinos and Washington’s Waterfront” celebrates the contributions of Filipinos in Washington and explores more than a century of Filipino American history, labor, culture and community along Washington’s saltwater shores. The show is presented through a partnership with the Filipino American National Historical Society and Maritime Washington National Heritage Area and runs through Feb. 20. The museum at 4121 Harborview Dr. is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday.
Fun and games
Locust Cider, 3207 57th St. Ct. (next to the Inn at Gig Harbor) hosts trivia night from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11.
Wednesday is also Trivia night at The Float, with games starting at 7:15 p.m. at 14511 Sherman Dr. In Purdy.
The Beer Vault hosts Trivia Night at 6:30 p.m. Thursdays.
Live music
Kimball Coffeeshop has an open mic at 6 p.m. Thursdays, with signups at 5:30 p.m. The Joel Astley Band play Kimball at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 13.
Chrissy Dykes brings her repertoire of pop, country, rock and soul to the Olalla Winery loft at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 13. Buy tickets here.
Locust Cider has “The Dead End” playing 1990s alternative rock at 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 14. All ages are welcome.

Jazz pianist Scott Cossu plays a Valentine’s Day gig Saturday, Feb. 14 at the Olalla Community Club. A potluck dinner starts at 6 p.m., with music at 7 p.m. Music tickets are $20. The Clubhouse is located at 12970 Olalla Valley Road.
Traditional Scottish musicians Alasdair White and Ross Martin play two concerts at the BoatShop, 3805 Harborview Dr., on Tuesday, Feb. 17. Their music is rooted in the traditions of the Scottish west coast, with White on fiddle and Martin on guitar. The 5 p.m. show is sold out; tickets to the 7:30 p.m. show are available here.
At the movies
The Flashback Cinema movie at the Galaxy Theatres in Uptown on Wednesday, Feb. 11, is “Casablanca,” the classic World War II love story and Best Picture Oscar winner starring Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman and Claude Rains. Showtimes are noon and 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 14. The Flashback movie on Sunday and Monday, Feb. 15 and 16, is the original “Jurassic Park.” Showtimes are 11:45 a.m. Sunday and 1 p.m. Monday. Flashback movies are just $5.
The Galaxy presents a Mystery Movie – a secret screening where guests enjoy a surprise film — at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 16, for just $5.
The Galaxy will show the Metropolitan Opera’s big-screen version of “Cinderella,” presented with an all-new English translation. Showtimes are 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 14 and 1 and 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 18.
The Galaxy’s Classic Film on Monday, Feb. 16 is “Arsenic and Old Lace” with Cary Grant. Galaxy Classic movies are just $5.
The Olalla Communty Club hosts a special showing of “Dr. Strangelove, or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb” at 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 16, at 12970 Olalla Valley Road.
Civic engagement
The Gig Harbor City Council meets for a study session at 3 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 12, at the Civic Center, 3501 Grandview St. Tentative discussion items include an update on tourism promotion and a legislative update from lobbyist Shelly Helder.
Attorneys from TacomaProBono will offer free advice at a legal aid popup from 10 a.m. to noon Monday, Feb. 16, at the Civic Center. Bring questions about eviction, landlord-tenant issues, family and consumer law, and other civil law concerns.
