Gentle grey skies and refreshingly cool weather greeted the attendees of Peninsula Art League’s (PAL) 39th annual Summer Festival, who came out in droves to support the local organization’s free celebration of the arts.

Held for its second year at Sehmel Homestead Park in partnership with PenMet Parks, the festival this year incorporated a creative corridor — including participants like the nonprofit arts BARN on Bainbridge and Ghostlight Performing Arts — as well as music from a lineup of artists sponsored by Kimball Coffeehouse.

Festival-goers visited a range of artists displaying their wares, marveling at all manner of works by painters, jewelers and glass artists to metalworkers, ceramicists, and cloth artisans. Nearby, kids could work on their own art skills, and engage in interactive learning with PenMet Parks.

Inside the Volunteer Vern Pavilion, people could view and vote for their favorite work of art in the PAL member show. Lynda Lidner’s “Ring of Bright Water” won Best of Show, while Barbara Best’s “A Sparkle in Her Eye” won the Mary Bessette Award. Beth Owen’s “Afternoon On the Fire Escape” won second place, and Cindy Baij’s “Walking Tail Pt. 2” won Honorable Mention.

The festival continues from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, July 20, at Sehmel Homestead Park.
