Mother’s Day Market planned near B’s Bagels

B’s Bagels and Butters owner Brittany Erwin heard that the Local Makers Market won’t be returning this year, so she decided to host a Mother’s Day Market in its place.

The market will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, May 9 and 10, outside the bagel shop at 3308 Uddenberg Lane. May 10 is Mother’s Day.

“I thought we could still bring small makers down that weekend and have the sale,” Erwin said. “It’s beneficial to have these events outside of the tourist season of the summer, and have an event to bring people in the rest of the year.”

Longtime plan

Hosting a market has been on Erwin’s radar since the B’s Bagels opened, she said. The shop includes a small retail area at which local businesses sell their goods.

“If this goes well, we’d like to do it again, and maybe during different seasons,” Erwin said.

On any given weekend, the shop serves up to 400 customers each day. Mother’s Day weekend has proven to be the busiest weekend since B’s Bagels opened three years ago, she said.

Vendors will set up in the nearly half-acre of vacant land next to the building. Fifteen vendors are signed up for each day of the market.

“We wanted to have something oriented toward Mother’s Day to provide shopping for moms and also for families,” Erwin said. “We want it approachable for everyone, but specialized toward the holiday weekend.”

Supported by city grant

Shaved ice, chicken and waffles, a flower vendor, a candle maker and a henna booth are just some of the foods and goods that will be available at the market.

The city of Gig Harbor awarded a $500 Brandani Killilea Creative Endeavor grant to support the market.  She’s using the funds to host a children’s hands-on arts and crafts booth both days.

Guests can park in the B’s Bagels lot, along the street, and at the Hop Pharm. Vendors will have dedicated parking off-site, Erwin said.
