Community-wide effort culminates in revitalized Fox Island tennis courts
A three-year fundraising campaign coordinated by Fox Island resident Sue Spencer and Fox Island United Church of Christ led to the successful renovation of two tennis courts on the church grounds.

Community stories are made possible in part by Peninsula Light Co, a proud sponsor of Gig Harbor Now.
More than 75 individuals, companies, and foundations contributed generously to fund the renovations, which will enable the church to keep the courts open to the public and available for use by everyone in the community. The effort received corporate donations from Tacoma Screw and grant funds from the United States Tennis Association.

The tennis courts have been in place since the 1970s and were in danger of becoming unsafe.
“We’re extremely grateful to everyone who donated. Without their support, this project would not have been possible,” church trustee John Mikkelborg said.
A special gift from the Frame Family Foundation helped put the fundraising over the finish line. Tracie Frame was a beloved member of the community who grew up playing tennis at the FIUCC courts, coached tennis at Gig Harbor High School, and mentored many youth. A memorial bench honoring Tracie has been installed, and the re-opening of the refurbished courts is being dedicated in her honor.
MidPac Construction did the refurbishment work and donated new nets. Looker Construction removed tree roots patching pavement, while Tacoma Sign Company donated fundraising signage and placed a sign placed at the courts thanking donors.
A celebration and dedication of the refurbished courts is planned for noon Sunday, June 28, at the courts at 756 Sixth Ave.
