Snow arrives just under the wire of winter

With just a week left in winter, the Gig Harbor area finally got its first snow.

Harborites woke up to a dusting of snow on Friday, March 13, seven days before the spring solstice. It was the first significant snowfall of the 2025-26 winter.

The city of Gig Harbor announced that four plows were clearing streets as of 8:45 a.m.

“Crews are concentrating on heavily traveled roads and hills,” the city’s alert said. “When main roads are cleared, they will fall back to secondary roads, as necessary. At this time, crews are not applying salt or other treatments.”

Pierce County warned that “heavy snowfall has begun accumulating on many roadways” and urged cautious driving.

Peninsula School District didn’t call a snow day, however — because Friday was already a “staff professional development day.”

The National Weather Service forecast calls for continued snowfall, possibly through Sunday morning. Forecasters expect little to no accumulation.

High temperatures will be in the mid-40s, with overnight lows at or near freezing.
