After trailing on election night, incumbent Democrat Deb Krishnadasan won the 26th District state Senate primary by 1,158 votes over Republican Michelle Caldier.

Elections officials certified the Aug. 5 primary on Tuesday, Aug. 19.

Both candidates advance to the November general election, but Krishnadasan’s come-from-behind victory could indicate her strength in November in the 26th, one of the state’s few true swing districts.

Caldier stronger in Pierce County

Krishnadasan, appointed to the state Senate seat after Emily Randall won election to Congress, earned 51.17% of the vote (23,166 total votes). Caldier, a veteran state representative, earned 48.62% (22,008).

In the Pierce County portion of the 26th District, Caldier and Krishnadasan virtually tied. Krishnadasan led by just 17 votes in Pierce County.

Krishnadasan was stronger in the Kitsap County portion of the 26th (South Kitsap and parts of Bremerton), winning by 1,141 votes.

Both candidates live in Gig Harbor.

Later-arriving ballots clearly helped Krishnadasan. Caldier led by 89 votes on election night.
