The district did not provide any additional information.
The announcement comes as emergency room visits for flu have grown across Washington since mid December, according to the state Department of Health. As of Jan. 31, over 5% of emergency room visits involve the flu.
“We don’t always think of flu as a serious illness,” Dr. Herbie Duber, Kitsap County’s top public health official, said in a statement. “But it can be life-threatening for community members, especially those who are at higher risk of severe disease, and we can all take steps to help protect them.”
Young children, older adults, pregnant women and people with health conditions are at higher risk. Vaccinations remain the most effective way to reduce symptoms and prevent serious illness. Public health officials recommend a yearly flu vaccine for everyone age 6 months and older. Vaccines are widely available at clinics and pharmacies.
Duber said flu activity typically peaks in late winter and declines in the spring. He recommends people get flu shots, even late in the season.
“We are still very much in the midst of flu season,” he said. “If you are at risk for severe illness, I highly recommend you get a flu shot.”
