Photos: Tides Tavern Classic Boat Show
A fleet of beautiful boats visited the Tides Tavern on May 16 and 17 for its Classic Boat Show.
Among them was the Virginia V, a steamship that was part of the Mosquito Fleet of Puget Sound ferries. The Porpoise floated down from Harbor History Museum, while the Gig Harbor BoatShop’s purse seiner Veteran represented the area’s historic fishing fleet.

The catamaran Koru motored past the vintage steamer Virginia V early Saturday morning while leaving Gig Harbor en route to Hawaii. The Koru, recipient last week of a mid-harbor engine transplant, serves as a floating campus for Koru Expeditions, which offers sailing and diving instruction. The yacht had a scheduled to stop in Seattle for later Saturday to pick up tuition-paying adult students who have signed up for instruction in transoceanic sailing. Koru’s co-owner Ken Parker and captain told GHN that the Gig Harbor-based firm will still provide local shore-based classes, but that the 50-foot yacht is not likely to return to Gig Harbor. In the future, he said, it will make its home in the South Pacific and other world waters. Photo by Chapin Day
