Gig Harbor Fire and Medic One crews battled a brush fire on 26th Avenue near Tacoma Narrows Airport on the afternoon of Thursday, July 30.

The agency reported the fire contained before 6 p.m. Firefighters remained on scene overnight to monitor the blaze.

The Washington state Department of Natural Resources sent a helicopter to drop water on the fire, which is located on a steep cliff bank that is difficult for firefighters to access. South Kitsap Fire and Rescue and the Key Peninsula Fire Department also helped.

The fire did not threaten any structures.

Helicopters took water from Sylvia Lake, off Whitmore Drive.

Gig Harbor Fire crews also extinguished a brush fire near the airport on July 20. Firefighters contained that blaze to about 100 feet by 100 feet of vegetation.

Another fire near the airport, on Stone Drive, grew to three acres on July 6.

Information about the causes of the fires was not immediately available.
