The Canadian Football League named Gig Harbor High School graduate Davis Alexander as its Most Outstanding Player on Thursday, Nov. 5.

Alexander, a quarterback for the Montreal Alouettes, received 40 first-place votes and 12 second-place votes in a poll of 56 journalists who cover the league. His teammate, receiver Tyson Philpot, was second with 12 first-place votes.

Philpot, whom Alexander describes in a video posted by the CFL on YouTube as his best friend, won the league’s Most Outstanding Canadian award.

Alexander, in his second year as the Alouettes’ starter, completed 72.1% of his pass attempts and racked up 5,257 yards. The 28-year-old threw 35 touchdowns against only four interceptions.

Gray Cup-bound, again?

The Alouettes finished the regular season with a league-best 14-4 record. Montreal hosts the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the Eastern Conference final at noon Saturday, Nov. 7. The Gray Cup (AKA the Canadian Super Bowl) is scheduled for 6 p.m. Nov. 15 in Calgary, Alberta.

Alexander, a 2016 Gig Harbor graduate, won two Narrows League MVP awards in high school and was all-state as a senior. He played collegiately at Portland State, finishing second on the school’s all-time passing list behind Neil Lomax, who played eight season in the NFL.

Alexander joined the Alouettes in 2022 and won a Gray Cup ring as a backup in 2023. Entrenched as the starter last year, Alexander led the Alouettes back to the Gray Cup. They lost to the Saskatchewan Roughriders, 25-17.

Alexander finished second in the CFL in passing yards, passing touchdowns and completions despite sitting out the final two regular-season games. He threw for more than 400 yards five times in a league that favors wide-open offenses.
