Gig Harbor athletic director Suek resigns

Blair Suek has resigned as athletic director at Gig Harbor High School, according to a statement from Peninsula School District chief of schools Michael Farmer.

Farmer’s statement announced Suek’s resignation and added that “we wish her all the best in her future endeavors.”

Suek has been the school’s athletic director since 2022, when she replaced longtime AD Bob Werner. She played volleyball at Pacific Lutheran University and previously was the athletic director and volleyball coach at Steilacoom High School.

Girls basketball situation

Suek’s decision may be related to recent turmoil in the school’s girls basketball program.

According to the school district, Suek prematurely relieved coach Michele Hackett of her duties last month without going through the proper channels with the human resources department.

The district re-hired Hackett, who this week announced that she resigned to take the girls basketball coaching job at Stadium High.

Suek told Gig Harbor Now in 2022 that she realized she “wasn’t going pro in volleyball, but I wanted to go pro in athletics.”

Suek said at the time that “building relationships with the kids and seeing them progress” is what she liked about coaching and that her job as athletic director was “to help support kids and coaches.”

Coaching hires

Suek hired well-respected football coach Jeff Scoma in 2025. Scoma led the Tides to a Fish Bowl win over Peninsula and a state tournament berth in his first season.

Suek also hired baseball coach Ben Sleeter, who guided the Tides to back-to-back state tournaments. Sleeter’s teams finished third at state in 2025 and won league and district titles this season.

The Tides also just completed third-place state finishes in boys soccer, girls track and girls water polo. The Gig Harbor girls golf team finished second at state during a successful spring sport season.
