Pothole forces lane Dec. 13 lane closures on westbound Narrows Bridge

If you’re crossing the Tacoma Narrows Bridge for Christmas shopping on Saturday, Dec. 13, watch out for lane closures on the way home.

The Washington State Department of Transportation says it needs to close the two left lanes of the westbound bridge to repair a pothole. That closure is set for 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 13.

WSDOT crews found the pothole on Nov. 19 and filled it temporarily the next day. The department needs to close two lanes for a longer-term solution.

The westbound span is the elder of the two Narrows Bridges and requires extensive maintenance. Problems with expansion joints forced the closure of two lanes in September, as well as four times in 2024.

The pothole repairs are on a different portion of the bridge than the expansion joint issues.

The work may be rescheduled if crews encounter heavy rains or high winds, WSDOT said.
