Letter to the Editor | Anti-lid lift arguments inaccurate and misleading

Posted on April 9th, 2024 By: Dorothy Bailey

On the evening of April 2, 2024, I attended a meeting sponsored by Engage Gig Harbor to learn more about the Gig Harbor Proposition 1, the “Levy Lid Lift”. Passage of this measure would allow the City Council to Increase Gig Harbor Property taxes from the current rate of $0.70/$1,000 to a maximum of $1.10/$1,000.

Imagine my surprise when upon entering the venue, I saw Tim Eyman sitting with the Against presenters. Tim Eyman is not a citizen of Gig Harbor and was convicted of …”intentionally committing ‘numerous and blatant violations’ of Washington’s voter-approved campaign finance laws.

Mr. Eyman’s comments and behavior were offensive. The arguments of the Against group were inaccurate and misleading. The presence of Mr. Eyman did nothing to support their cause.

Gig Harbor desperately needs this increase in taxes. Why? The City has grown by 65% while revenues from sources such as development and property taxes have declined. The City has not requested a property tax rate increase in over 40 years. We cannot wait any longer and maintain the level of services we expect.

I urge everyone in Gig Harbor to join me in voting YES for Proposition 1.
