Letter to the editor: Support Gig Harbor Fire bond

Posted on May 23rd, 2022 By: Brad Harris

I want to thank the Gig Harbor Fire & Medic One Board of Fire Commissioners for placing a facilities bond on the August primary election ballot, and I thank our community for considering this vital measure.

With Gig Harbor’s growth of 16% since 2010 and a concurrent 37% increase in call volumes, we require adequate facilities to keep the public and firefighters safe. In addition to renovating stations, the bond would fund a local training facility. This ensures that personnel hone their life- and property-saving skills more often and closer to home.

Funding from the bond would improve firefighter health and safety. Currently, stations without adequate decontamination areas can leave remnants of soot, smoke and other chemicals on our gear and equipment. Thorough removal of these carcinogensand chemicals helps reduce the risk of cancer and other blood borne illnesses.

Please learn more about what the bond would fund at www.gigharborfire.org/about/bond. It’s an honor to serve you and your family.
