Letter to the Editor | Support Proposition 1 …. and please stop removing our signs
I don’t live in the city limits of Gig Harbor, but it has been my community for over 50 years.
I have seen the phenomenal transformation of the Harbor History Museum from the little cabin by the sewage treatment plant to the amazing structure and Gig Harbor icon it is today. My husband and I both volunteer at the museum’s events and special projects.
So, when Proposition 1 was put on the ballot, we volunteered to help promote Cultural Access in Gig Harbor. This proposition will benefit numerous non-profits in Gig Harbor and community members of all ages in the area. Tacoma has had a Cultural Access tax for 7 years and the community has benefitted tremendously.
So, what is the cost to the community? One penny per $10 spent on non-food items within the city limits. All funds remain in the community.

$8 out of $10 raised will be from purchases made by people that live outside the city limits. That means 80% of the funds collected to benefit the community will come from non-Gig Harbor residents but 100% of funds collected will benefit the community.
I urge you to support Proposition 1 if you are reading this and are a Gig Harbor resident! If you’re not a Gig Harbor resident tell your friends who are residents to support Proposition 1 Cultural Access.
We volunteered to put up signs for Proposition 1. We got the permits from the city, placed signs only in approved locations, but someone has been ripping them out of the ground. They have been pulled out and hidden behind a sandwich board and most recently thrown out in the blackberry bushes up at Peacock and Borgen Blvd.
As these vandals are not ripping out all the signs it seems sadly a very targeted attack. I will say this to the vandal, your vote is your voice. If you live in the city limits and are a registered voter, vote. But please stop ripping out the signs for a program that will benefit numerous non-profits and community members in this community.
Remember our cost is just 1 cent per $10 and Gig Harbor’s sales tax will still be the lowest of all surrounding communities!
