Letter to the Editor | City, county leaders have failed on infrastructure

Posted on December 17th, 2025 By: John Fry

I want to both congratulate and fully support Mr. LaFreniere on his recent thoughtful comments.

It is completely clear to all of us that live here, that the city of Gig Harbor, and now the Pierce County, have failed to provide the necessary infrastructure expansion to support much of the new building over the past 10 years. We all are now suffering the consequences, which grow by the day. The current, and past Gig Harbor leaders have failed their citizens in this respect. This must stop.

In my opinion, and going forward, No Final Building Permits, in Gig Harbor or the greater Gig Harbor area, should be authorized without a clear funding and construction plan to build or expand any future impacted infrastructure. This should particularly apply to Roadway expansion and Sewer capacity expansion. School capacity also must be to be considered as basic infrastructure.

As residents of Gig Harbor, and the surrounding Greater Gig Harbor, we all need to stand up and demand that building without adequately expanding infrastructure must stop. I believe that the developers should pay for most of this cost, with the city, or county funding the rest.
Canterwood Blvd. will need a new third lane from Baker down to Borgen, and the growing problem at the Borgen circle will need to be adequately addressed. Sewer capacity and surface water runoff issues will also need to be addressed as basic infrastructure.

All future expansion of our area must be accompanied with adequate Infrastructures expansion. This has not occurred in the past, but it must occur going forward.
