Letter to the Editor | Celebrating aviation at Tacoma Narrows Airport Day
This last Saturday I attended the annual Tacoma Narrows Airport Day, along with a crowd approaching a thousand or more. I saw happy families with children of all ages, as well as hundreds of adults, all curious to see and experience the wonders of aviation on display that day.
Aircraft of many sizes and types on display, vendor tents for flight schools, other aviation related organizations and local Gig Harbor businesses. I saw lots of folks at the RAZ (Rotary Aviation Zone), lined up at the feaux “control tower” observation deck. Even a few fly-by’s by vintage and historic aircraft overhead in formation. A very well-attended event by our Gig Harbor and Key Peninsula Community. As a local architect and former general aviation pilot myself, I found this event to be a happy place.

I am making this distinction from a local individual, writing a recent “series” in letters to the editor, raising negativity from a few home owners, apparently complaining about the occasional noise from small aircraft flying over their homes. I am guessing that some folks have moved to the area surrounding, and suddenly discovered there is an airport, (shock?) that has been here since 1960. … You all know who I am referring to, and I for one am growing tired of this negativity.
The Tacoma Narrows Airport is a jewel in our Community, offering opportunities for flight schools, and local aircraft owners to enjoy aviation, it is a job creator for aviation related employment, a destination for hundreds of aviation tourists flying here to attend events, to experience the Aero Museum, and a great restaurant as well.
Let’s remember these attributes, before we let a few individuals with petty complaints take over our conversations about this wonderful asset in our Community.
