Letter to the Editor | Congratulations to retiring Chief Busey

Posted on June 11th, 2025 By: Sheryl Richards

My husband, Denny Richards, was a former Gig Harbor Police Chief (1987-1995, deceased February 2024). He and I wish Kelly Busey the best of luck in retirement and thank him for his service.

Denny hired Kelly back in the day and considered it one of his best personal and professional decisions. The time (1991) was shortly after the Coast Guard left Gig Harbor, and there was a noticeable rise in crime on the waters of the harbor. When searching for an additional officer, he was delighted to meet Kelly. Kelly’s experience, common-sense approach, and talents fit perfectly with the City’s need for quality officers, and Denny’s plan to initiate a police presence on the water with a water patrol. Kelly is well known for his love of and skill with boats.

Denny always took personal pride in Kelly’s accomplishments and his rise through the ranks of the department.

Kelly quickly became a family friend and has been very supportive. Good luck to you, Kelly! don’t work too hard, and take care. You make us proud!
