Letter to the Editor | Does Gig Harbor need a multipurpose center?

Posted on November 4th, 2025 By: Leanna Stanton

Gig Harbor has a long list of not-for-profit organizations that provide invaluable services that enrich the greater Gig Harbor area. They are the backbone of what make this community great.

From serving hot dogs at national night out (Kiwanis), to the new welcome sign (Rotary), to welcoming new neighbors (New Neighbors of Gig Harbor), to providing funding to deserving youth (Peninsula Class of 88 Foundation) and many others, too numerous to mention, these groups do incredible work to support our community.

We have youth in our community looking for an indoor activity area, especially when the winter months seem particularly long. Youth outdoor groups, such as the Gig Harbor Canoe & Kayak Race Team and Gig Harbor Junior Sailing lack indoor space for team gatherings. A good number of our youth groups lack a gathering space needed to facilitate the leadership meetings.

Community artists have long been seeking a space to gather and create. And our seniors have long been looking for a space to gather and enjoy thoughtful programming and services.

Is it time to consider a Multi-Purpose Community Center? Many in the community feel an indoor performing arts, kids’ activities, adult programs, and community events space is long overdue.

The city already owns a site with parking, sewer, water and electricity. Wouldn’t it be better to remodel or rebuild a modest 1-story community space rather than demolish the Old Masonic Lodge at Crescent Creek Park and replace it with a large, covered canopy area?

What are your thoughts? We’d love to hear from you! Please email us your input at [email protected] (gig harbor future community center)

What best describes you? (ie: NFP organization, community member, etc.)

What would you use an indoor Multi-Purpose Community Center for? (ie: art programs, meetings, small theater production, birthday parties, etc.)

Important…no answer is wrong! Send us your ideas. This is not a programming exercise but rather understanding if there is a community need and how the space might be used.

If you would like to see a Community Center, instead of a covered canopy area, please join us for a ‘”FLASH MOB PHOTO” in front of the site. Help us show our city leadership we need a building … not a covered canopy!

WHEN: Sunday, Nov 9 at Noon
WHERE: The Lodge at Crescent Creek Park – 3303 Vernhardson Street
