Letter to the Editor | Finding true north in Gig Harbor

Posted on June 15th, 2026 By: Vic Barry

Apparently Gig Harbor once had an official compass down on the waterfront back when and where the fishing fleet was the focus of the seaside residents.

But apparently it got lost during the rapid development phase which is obviously never-ending. How else to explain the disparity between true latitude and longitude, and the accepted descriptions of directions we suffer through today?

For example, the westbound lanes of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge go North, and the eastbound, South.  Uptown is down from downtown, not up. You report that Rush Co. is building two developments near St. Anthony’s hospital. The one to the north is called “Trailside” apartments, but no trail exists.  The one to the south of the hospital is called the “North Annex.”

Then there’s Goodnough Dr NW, which mostly runs East and West and North and South. Having survived the gauntlet of the Borgen roundabouts, where I often have to turn west to go east and turn south to go north, I’ve given up looking for that long lost compass.

Fortunately, Google Maps now makes Gig Harbor’s signage just Goodnough.
