Letter to the Editor | Helping older adults age safely
I’ve been thinking a lot about the strength of our community and how much good work is being done here in Gig Harbor. Every day, I see people volunteering, supporting neighbors, and working to improve systems that haven’t changed in decades. That quiet, steady effort is what makes this place special.
At Kensington Gardens, we’ve spent the past eight years working to expand options for our aging population — creating a place where older adults can remain connected to the community they love, with thoughtful care and dignity. We’ve been inspired by the encouragement we’ve received from so many residents who recognize the growing need for better living solutions.
Of course, like any important effort, our work has faced challenges. A small number of voices have at times made progress difficult. But what has stood out even more is the overwhelming support from people who believe in forward-thinking, compassionate solutions for our elders. The positive feedback we hear — from families, caregivers, and long-time Gig Harbor residents — reminds us why this work matters.
Social media can sometimes magnify conflict or misinformation, but it also gives our community a way to share stories, express support, and stay connected. When we focus on constructive conversations and kindness, it becomes clear how many people here truly care about each other’s well-being.
I’m writing because I believe the common good is still very much alive in Gig Harbor. Most of us want to build a community where older adults can age safely, where local businesses feel supported, and where neighbors work together despite differences. When we amplify those positive voices, the ones rooted in compassion and collaboration, we become stronger.
Thank you to everyone who continues to support efforts that make Gig Harbor a caring, forward-looking place to call home.
