Letter to the Editor | Is demolition the solution?

Posted on October 27th, 2025 By: John McMillan

The city is currently considering demolition of a landmark: the Masonic Lodge at Crescent Creek Park. Apparently, the Parks Commission agrees.

Is this the best outcome for a midsized — centrally located — affordable — existing community meeting space?

Can you imagine Gig Harbor without Skansie Brothers Park, (home to Skansie Netshed and Harbor Wildwatch), Eddon Boat Park (home of Gig Harbor BoatShop), the Maritime Pier (a collaboration with the Commercial Fishermen’s Club), Ancich Park (used by the Gig Harbor Kayak Club), and Wilkinson Farm (and its Community Garden)?

All these structures are owned by the city and managed by local community groups. They provide invaluable uses and meeting spaces.

If this community values the Lodge as an important culturally significant Landmark — One that can provide space for the Performing Arts, Kids’ Activities, Adult Programs, and Community Events Space — then we need you to join us at noon Sunday, Nov. 9, for a “flash mob” photo at the Masonic Lodge. If enough people turn-out, we can show the city that demolition is not the best answer.
