Letter to the editor | It’s not just about permits

Posted on December 5th, 2025 By: Kelly Watson

I’m writing with a sincere hope that we can strengthen fairness, accountability, and cooperation here in Pierce County. Recently, I’ve noticed a pattern worth reflecting on: some residents seem to face very strict scrutiny over minor property issues, while others undertake multi-year construction projects with no visible permits and little apparent oversight. Rather than placing blame, this gives us an opportunity to ask a constructive question: How can we ensure that our rules are applied consistently and fairly to everyone?

This conversation isn’t just about permits — it’s about building public trust. Our regulations exist to protect safety, health, and the character of our neighborhoods. When people feel enforcement is uneven, it can create frustration and discourage those who are trying their best to follow the proper process.

Anyone who has built a home or started a business in Pierce County understands the commitment required – the time, funds, and energy spent doing things the right way. It’s because of this investment that it can feel disheartening when others appear to bypass the rules entirely. But instead of dwelling on the frustration, we can use these experiences to improve clarity, communication, and consistency going forward.

Social media also plays a role. When inaccurate information is shared, it can strain relationships between neighbors and create misunderstandings with county officials. Yet I truly believe most people in our community want the same thing: a respectful, safe place to live, where we look out for one another and give each other the benefit of the doubt.

My hope is that we continue moving toward a more collaborative, community-centered approach to governance — one where concerns are addressed with understanding, where responsible residents are supported, and where integrity and transparency guide our decisions. When we focus on shared values instead of disagreements, we create a stronger, more united Pierce County.

Let’s work together to ensure fairness is not just an ideal, but a daily practice that lifts our entire community.
