Letter to the Editor | PenLight board members are hard-working and dedicated

Posted on April 3rd, 2026 By: Jill Guernsey

As members of PenLight and the Gig Harbor and Key Peninsula communities, we have high expectations of the service provided. When the power goes out, we want it back on immediately, if not sooner. We expect that our rates won’t skyrocket, and we expect that PenLight will be fiscally responsible. Beyond that, most of us don’t pay much attention to the internal actions of PenLight.

Because of recent publicity regarding PenLight’s proposed renovation of its current facility, a few individuals have resorted to name-calling which not only takes the focus away from the issue, but it is, in my opinion, childish and beneath the dignity of our wonderful community.

I have known several PenLight board members for years. They are hard-working, honest individuals, dedicated to doing the best they can for our community. They take their duties as leaders of PenLight seriously. And while they may not always agree, they do not disagree publicly.

I have also known and worked with CEO Jafar Taghavi for many years. He has been a resident of our community and PenLight CEO since 2007. Thanks in large part to his leadership and that of the board, our electric rates are the second lowest in the region. Without a doubt he cares about this community.

Information about the project is posted on PenLight’s website. I encourage you to stay informed about the issue, but please, stick to the issue.
